CC2540: Does the SoC support remote programming?

Hi,

I am considering to use the CC2540 SoC on my new PCB design. I would like to ask if this SoC supports remote programming. That is, can I upload the program from a desktop computer to the chip via Bluetooth (without wire connection)?

If not, is there a chip that supports remote programming? Or, is it possible that I use CC2540 along with other ICs to achieve the function?

If you are asking CC2540 to support BLE over the air download, the answer is yes. However, CC2540 is pretty old chip and I would recommend you to use CC2642R for new BLE design.

Hi,

To complete the previous answer, I would suggest to have a look at the out-of-the-box experience (project_zero) running on the LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1 (you can find it in the SIMPLELINK-CC13X2-26X2-SDK). This example will allow you to update the firmware running on the CC2642R device using a mobile application.

For the rest, this feature is called OAD (Over the Air Download)

Thank you for your explanation. Can I update the firmware by using a desktop computer? Or it is limited to mobile devices?

Thank you for your advice. Since Bluetooth 5 is compatible with Bluetooth 4, I guess that CC2540 is still OK if the connection speed and range do not matter a lot to me?

Are there other vital differences between BLE 5 and 4?

Hi,

I read the out-of-box experience of LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1. It showed you how to change stack by using OAD. I would like to ask if it is possible to download a general-purpose program via OAD?

For example, I wrote a program that make a GPIO of the chip output a square wave. May I use OAD to load the program to CC2640? And is it possible to use OAD via a desktop computer (the CCS software)?

Yes, you can do OAD from a desktop to update a general application as you mentioned.
