CC2541: QDIDs validation date & Details FCC certification

Part Number: CC2541

Dear reader,

I would like to ask 3 questions regarding the topic of testing for FCC on products containing the reference design with CC2541.

Please bear with me if some questions are simply irrelevant or stupid. I am currently still in the proces of gaining knowledge about the FCC.

1. I see the BLE stack used should be compliant for these tests. The BLE stack 1.5.x currently has valid QDIDs. Do you know when those are expected to expire? The reason I ask this is that I read somewhere that they are valid for 3 years (I'm sorry, could not find where I read that but if I find it again I will post the link). If this is true, then I expect them to expire soon as BLE Stack V1.5.0 was released on 18 April 2019.

2. [Using the document "How to Certify Your Bluetooth Product" from TI] In the list of qualified designs -> includes, the SimpleBLEPeripheral example is not present. Does this mean the QDID cannot be used when the SimpleBLEPeripheral project was used? Why is this the case?

3. I have deleted or renamed characteristics from the SimpleBLEPeripheral example. Should I perform seperate tests for those.

All help is highly appreciated,

Kind regards,

Stefan

  • Hey Stefan,

To clarify, FCC certification is separate than Bluetooth SIG qualification. The How to Certify Your Bluetooth Product guide covers both Bluetooth certification as well as "Regulatory Testing", which is where FCC falls under.

This true, unfortunately I cannot comment on TI's future plans on a public forum with regards to renewing this.

    2. [Using the document "How to Certify Your Bluetooth Product" from TI] In the list of qualified designs -> includes, the SimpleBLEPeripheral example is not present. Does this mean the QDID cannot be used when the SimpleBLEPeripheral project was used? Why is this the case?

You'll actually notice that this is not the case for all devices, not just the CC254x. This is because the qualification covers the stack alongside the profiles listed. The SimpleBLEPeripheral example is not an entity that needs qualification itself. You need to focus on the components that the example leverages, like custom profiles, Bluetooth SIG defined profiles, as well as the individual stack components leveraged.

    3. I have deleted or renamed characteristics from the SimpleBLEPeripheral example. Should I perform seperate tests for those.

Provided you use a 128-bit UUID, you should not need to requalify for the customized profile. See https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/bluetooth-group/bluetooth/f/bluetooth-forum/546712/regarding-the-bluetooth-qualification-and-declaration for more info as well as https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/bluetooth-group/bluetooth/f/bluetooth-forum/397486/bluetooth-sig-qualification-listing-and-custom-profiles-services .

As a disclaimer, the final say/answer to any questions you have with regards to qualification should be directed to a Bluetooth Qualification Consultant (BQC). I would suggest working with one if you would like help with the process as they will answer any/all questions along the way.

  • Thank you for taking the time to answer all questions! They clarify a lot.
