CC2640R2F: How to achieve Long range with BLE 4.2

Part Number: CC2640R2F

Hello,

We are currently working on a project with the following details:

Device CC2640R2LAUNCHXL
SDK simplelink_cc2640r2_sdk_5_30_00_03
IDE IAR8.32.2
Reference Project

multi role project

We are looking for long range solutions. I have came across Bluetooth 5 coded PHY long range demo for CC2640r2f. But we are running BLE 4.2.

I wanted to know any such solution/example available to have long range while using BLE4.2 in CC2640R2F.?

  • Hi Niranjan,

A good way to increase the range is by increasing the TX power. Are you trying to increase the range for connections or advertising?

    Best,

    Nima

  • Hi Nima,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

We have tried till +5dBm, but not seen big improvements.

We want for both. But mainly for the connection.

And do you suggest anything on improving internal biasing of RF side?

    - Our custom board support only internal bias.

Please let me know if you need more information.

    Thanks

    Niranjan

  • Hey Niranjan,

Unfortunately, there isn't much that can be done (from a software perspective) if only using v4.2. The Bluetooth 5 LE coded phy was designed for long range, so that will be required to achieve even longer range.

Beyond improvements in hardware (for example, antenna design, AFE, etc) and increasing the TX power as suggested, you will not be able to achieve a significant improvement in range by tweaking things in software. This is a limitation of the v4.2 spec.
