CC2640: BLE-Stack SDK support

Part Number: CC2640
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BLE-STACK

Hi Engineers,

I have a customer ask a question about CC2640 and its SDK https://software-dl.ti.com/simplelink/esd/ble_stack_2_x/2.02.07.06/exports/release_notes_BLE_Stack_2_2_7.html

I want to know what does it mean by "Version 2.2.7 of the BLE-Stack is a maintenance update to TI’s existing royalty-free Bluetooth low energy software protocol stack which is certified for Bluetooth specification version 5.1. This release includes support for all core specification version 4.2 Low Energy (LE) features as well as several development kits. This protocol stack update is in addition to support of all major Bluetooth LE core specification version 4.1 features, including support for up to 8 master or slave BLE connections. Please note that no Bluetooth 5 or Bluetooth 5.1 features are supported. " Can this SDK support BLE 5.1 or not? It is confusing to see both answer "is certified for Bluetooth specification version 5.1" and "no Bluetooth 5 or Bluetooth 5.1 features are supported"

  • Hey Simon,

I apologize for the confusion here, it took me some time to grasp this myself when I first heard of this.

Can this SDK support BLE 5.1 or not?

From a feature perspective, no, this SDK does not support BLE 5.1 features.

Now, if a customer wants to use the CC2640 in a product that only uses BLE 4.2 features, they can still qualify their product as a BLE 5 product from a certification standpoint. This does not mean the device actually implements BLE 5 features, as these features are optional to support.

I hope this clarifies things. When in doubt, I highly suggest talking with your BQC (Bluetooth Qualification Consultant) who can answer all questions as it pertains to certification.
