CC2540DK-Mini PC Host (64-bit question)?

Hi,

I'm new to the Bluetooth development world.  The CC2540DK-Mini kit looks to be a good starting point, the application I'm looking to proto-type is similar to several of the examples documented with the kit.

I have some initial concerns.  The kit documentation specification calls out that the PC Host for the USB dongle be running WIndows XP or later, 32-bit support only. I'm presuming this has to do with 32-bit device drivers.  I only have access to 64 bit Windows 7 machines, does this mean that the CC2540DK-Mini is not an option for me, or has there been further development on the Mini kit which now enables it to function on 64 bit machines?

Secondly, there is no currently available (in stock)  CC2540DK Mini kits from either TI or its list of distributors.  The back order date has moved at least once since I began checking last week and now is targeted for late December.  This is concerning, is there a high demand spike or some other reason for unavailability?

Given the 64 bit issue, the availability issue, I'm wondering if I should be looking in another direction? If so, any guidance from this group?

Thanks,

Chip Keyes

  • Hi Chip,

I run on a 64bit Win7, which works excellent for me :) You are correct on the stock Q, the demand is very high and we are adjusting to handle this (BLE is happening, woho!). We have an updated version of the kit coming out soon as well, CC2541DK-MINI.

Personally, No, you should not look in another direction. Especially with BLEv1.3 around the corner.

    Best Regards

  • Thanks Nick. I'll try and be patient until a kit becomes available.  I was able to find an older PC with Windows XP installed so I should be good either way on the 32 vs 64 bit issue. Good to know that there is a positive expectation for running on Win7.

I have the host code written and running on a brand new iPAd mini, I just need a keyfob and the flash programmer... hopefully soon!

    Thanks,

    Chip
