LAUNCHXL-CC1352R1: OAD update issue with dmm_wsnnode_remote_display_oad_app example

I am testing the OAD functionality in DMM (as I needed in this question before the latest SDK release). I am using the latest SDK simplelink_cc13x2_26x2_sdk_3_30_00_03 with CC1352R1_LAUNCHXL HW Rev. B. I have an issue in OAD update using dmm_wsnnode_remote_display_oad_app example.

I build and flash the dmm_wsnnode_remote_display_oad_app example (using CCS 9.2.0). Then try to use EOAD in Simplelink SensorTag android application on my mobile (or Simplelink Starter, they are both the exact same UI and behavior).

I tried several firmware images, including the following, and they all have the same result:

Default Project Zero (from the app)
rfWsnNodeIntFlashOadClientUApp_CC1352R1_LAUNCHXL_app_v1.bin (from [SDK]\examples\rtos\CC1352R1_LAUNCHXL\easylink\hexfiles\onChipOad\ccs)

The issues happening:

1- After choosing "TI OAD Service" in the app, the app hangs on this screen with status (TI EOAD Client waiting for MTU update).

2- If the app proceeds after this screen, the download stops at random times with this error: (EOAD Image transfer failed, cannot continue !).

And after this error, I can't find the board advertising to retry! I must restart it several times (maybe flash the example again) to be advertising again.

Am I missing steps or something?

Hi James,

1) What phone(s) did you test this with?

2) You say you tested with both Project Zero (off-chip OAD) and easylink onChipOad project, can you please make sure you're always downloading an image which is compatible with your BIM, both in terms of on-chip/off-chip and whether or not SECURITY is used.

I am sorry for the late reply.

1) I have tried two mobile phones, Iphone 6s plus and Huawei p20 lite (Android 9).

2) Yes, they were compatible.

Hi James,

My reason for asking is that Project zero and rfWsnNodeIntFlashOadClientUApp are not compatible (one uses off chip and the other on-chip oad).

Hi Marie,

Actually, I tried both because it was not clear if the example "dmm_wsnnode_remote_display_oad_app" was created for on-chip or off-chip example. They are both having the same behavior, so the compatibility is not the issue.

Is there some steps missing for testing? Is there a specific BIM file or project configuration that needs to be set first?

Hi James,

dmm_wsnnode_remote_display_oad_app is for off-chip OAD. Also per default the SECURITY define is set in the project compiler predefined symbols list.

If you use the C:\ti\simplelink_cc13x2_26x2_sdk_3_30_00_03\examples\nortos\CC1352R1_LAUNCHXL\bim\bim_offchip project SECURITY is not set by default, you can set it by choosing one of the security build configurations.

OK, is there an example for on-chip OAD in DMM ? or a document/manual to integrate BLE OAD solution with DMM examples?

Hi James, sorry for the late answer.

We don't have any on-chip OAD example for DMM. Since most of the DMM example already consume quite a lot of flash we haven't prioritized implementing this.

You can start with a DMM off-chip oad example as the starting point and use a BLE on-chip OAD example to make the necessary changes.
