CCS/BOOSTXL-AOA: BOOSTXL-AOA

Part Number: BOOSTXL-AOA

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

We are trying to run angle of arrival using the following hardware/software:

AoA BOOSTXL - AoA

CC2640R2 (following this specs http://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?node=AHckEvhg0Y3xs5rlangU2w__FUz-xrs__LATEST)

simplelink_cc2640r2_sdk_3_20_00_21

rtls_agent_cli.exe

The results are somewhat strange:

- We can not run AoA feature

- RSSI values are very small even though the distance between transmitter and receiver are 30cm

- We loose the connection when the distance between transmitter and receiver is above around 1m

(see screen below)

We managed to run older version of AoA measurement using the same hardware, that is:

AoA BOOSTXL - AoA

CC2640R2 (following this specs http://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?node=AHckEvhg0Y3xs5rlangU2w__FUz-xrs__LATEST)

but with the following software version:

simplelink_cc2640r2_sdk_2_30_00_28

We got AoA data, but RSSI signal was also very low.

I have the following questions:

1) Do we use right hardware + software combination?

2) Are these RSSI values correct (we do not get results for distances >1m)?

3) Why is it impossible to measure AoA using cc2640r2_sdk_3_20_00_21 software? Is it necessary to add Passive device? What hardware should we use for this purpose?

  • Hi Piotr,

TI has made the decision to discontinue further development and support of the TI-proprietary Angle of Arrival (AoA) on the CC2640R2. We recommend and welcome our customers using AoA on CC2640R2 to transition from the CC2640R2 to the new RTLS examples based on the Bluetooth 5.1 specification which can be used with the CC13x2R and CC26x2R devices. These software examples can be found in the SimpleLink™ CC13x2 and CC26x2 software development kit 3.40 or later which features a Bluetooth 5.1 qualified stack with support of Bluetooth 5.1 Angle of Arrival. To make this transition, here is a list of available resources you can reference: Simple Link Academy, AoA stack users guide, LaunchPad Tool Order Page

Using CC26x2R1 and the latest SIMPLELINK-CC13X2-26X2-SDK, you will be able to run he example with only two boards (no passive required).

    I hope this will help,

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Clement,

Thanks for your reply. I would like to clarify a few more issues:

    1)     As I understand we should use LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1 instead of CC2640R2. Should we use LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1 as signal source and LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1 + BOOSTXL-AOA as a receiver to read AoA? Is it correct?

    2)     Is BOOSTXL-AOA compliant with LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1?

    3)     In case of CC2640R2 we had to change the position of capacitor C1 (see image) to connect to BOOSTXL-AOA. Should we do the same in case of LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1? Is another version of LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1 which has the capacitor mounted horizontally (see image) which do not require changing the capacitor position?

    Kind regards,

    Piotr

    Correct

    Yes, of course :)

Exactly as you did for CC2640R2, you will have to change the position of capacitor C1 to connect the BOOSTXL-AOA to the LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1.
I am sorry, we do not provide the LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1 with this modification already done.

    Best regards,
