TRPGR30ATGA: Required help for its range and suitable reader

Part Number: TRPGR30ATGA
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TRPGR30ATGB, MRD2EVM

Actually, we are in search of a Glass-Encapsulated RFID Tag(RFID Glass Tube) and the Corresponding Tag Reader.

Can you please let us know about the glass tube and the suitable reader device with the read range of about 1 meter ?

Our application includes the RFID detection from Cattle's Rumen. The Glass tube will be inserted in the plastic capsule(Bolus as shown in figure below). After this, the Plastic Capsule/Bolus will be inserted in the Cattle's Rumen by a Bolus Gun. Below image will be helpful for you to understand. Will the glasstube be able to be detected by the reader properly in this case ? Please suggest us suitable RFID glass tube & Reader for this use case.

The one which we found is as per below links:

Glass Tube:

Glass Tube Reader:

Please Let us know if they can be used for our application.

Also, please let us know on below:

  • Minimum working period of the glass tube
  • Disinfection Methods or Disinfection & Specific Sterilization Guidelines while putting it in Bolus

Let me know if you have any queries.

  • Hello Kamesh,

a suitable transponder for your application would be the 32mm glass transponder TRPGR30ATGB or the TRPGR30ENATGB, depending on the required numbering scheme. For the reader a "Long-Range HDX" reader, with a gate antenna, is needed to maintain a read range of 1m. The reader you have selected is not able to fulfill your requirements. Due to its limited output power it can not be used as long-range reader. TI is no more  providing long-range readers or gate antennas. There are several companies around that offers reader solutions for this kind of applications.

The working period of the transponder (data retention time) depends on the temperature but is at room temperature > 10 years. For the disinfection of the transponder we can not provide any guidelines.

  • Hi Helfried,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Can you please let us know why we can't use TRPGR30ATGA ? Difference between TRPGR30ATGA and TRPGR30ATGB is just in the dimensions...correct ? TRPGR30ATGA is 23 mm in length while TRPGR30ATGB is 32mm.

Also, what is the output power of MRD2EVM ? I have checked the technical documents available for MRD2EVM but couldn't find the output power value. Can you please suggest a suitable reader for the tag from any company/manufacturer that you know ?

    Thanks & Regards,
    Kamesh Lakhwani

  • Hi Kamesh,

the 32mm transponder has a larger read-range compared to the 23mm transponder which is the result of the larger antenna (ferrite) in the transponder. Because you asked for 1m reading distance the 32mm gives you the better performance.

When looking at the max. supply current of the MRD2 reader of 100mA @5V, the output power is < 0.5W. When searching for readers with a larger read range not only the output power of the transmitter is the limiting factor but also the sensitivity of the receiver.

I cannot make a recommendation for a reader but for example companies like Protagd or Agrident are suppliers for long range HDX readers.

    Best Regards,
