WL1835MODCOM8B: Wifi flapping between 2 APs every couple seconds to minutes.

Hello,

We are working on a product that uses wifi as well as Bluetooth both the feature on TI chip. We are seeing a very frequent connection and disconnected of wifi network from one AP to another only in a case when both the APs have same SSID but different BSSID. Wifi is flapping mostly every min or so. Our team need help to find out the root cause while we are trying different configurations at our end.

Here is the platform details:

Bluetooth firmware:  TIInit_11.8.32.bts
Version : TI_P2.147

Wifi firmware:
WL18xx MAC firmware version 8.9.0.0.86
WL18xx PHY firmware version 8.2.0.0.245

BlueZ stack 5.55

Linux 4.14.98+

APs are standard Cisco Meraki dual band 802.11n multi-ap enterprise setup with band and congestion steering. I have attached the wpa_supplicant config and our device specific config used to configure TI firmware. I have also attached a small snippet of kernel logs whenever these disconnection happens.

Hi,

As per log, DUT is missing consecutive beacons "wlcore: Beacon loss detected. roles:0x1". This could be due to weak RF signal.

We are seeing this issue with the devices sitting next to router . To us it looks like instead of prioritizing BSSID by RSSI, it’s just snagging a random one out of the list of BSSIs beaconing the SSID

I have used a tool called flamesshot https://flameshot.org/ to capture the network activity and I attach them as well.

wpa_supplicant handles the configured network connections i.e. when to scan , which AP to connect to etc. You would need to look into the supplicant and troubleshoot it . It doesn't seem to be WiLink8 driver issue. As per logs , all we can tell is driver gets beacon loss event and then it connects to another AP. Selecting and connection to specific AP is wpa supplicant decision .

Our wpa_supplicant version wpa_supplicant v2.9-R8.8+. I have shared wpa_supplicant config file. Do you have any recommendations on basis on that ?

We are not able to comment much on this. You will need to troubleshoot at your end why wpa supplicant is selecting one AP over another AP. You may also use bgscan parameter in wpa supplicant conf and check if it improves the roaming .
