MSP-EXP430FG4618 & CC2520EM?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2520, Z-STACK

Hi there,

I just have a quick question, will the CC2520EM work with my MSP-EXP430FG4618? I have done a bit of reading and have the impression that I can't, however I am still hoping that I can...

Any help would/answers would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Rhys H.

  • Hello Rhys H.,

In general you can combine the two as with most MSP430s and radios.  They tend to work quite well together.

Having said that please note the following two important points

    - I do not beleive there are any current software examples for this hardware combination

    - Z-Stack for the CC2520 is written for the newer F5438 based experimenter board.  So if you were planning on using Zigbee this will not work on the FG4618 board.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Yoda

  • Thanks for that Yoda,

I was trying to use it for Zigbee... I will have to see if I can get a hold of the F5438 board.

However this does raise some new questions for me.  I thought that Z-Stack was written for the MSP430, and therefore could be used with the FG4618? Does this mean that there are only a selection of the MSP430s that are Zigbee compatible? Or is it just the experimenter board specifically?

    Thanks for the help again.

    Rhys H.

  • Hi Rhys H.,

Normally yes, it should not be a lot of work to port examples/code between MSPs.    The problem with Z-Stack is simply that it is not provided as full source.  Therefore in the particular Z-Stack case it is not typically possible.

    Hope this clarifies.

    Cheers,
    Yoda

  • Thanks for the speedy replies Yoda.

Okay, so it could be possible to use the CC2520EM, the FG4618 board and Zigbee?  However there is currently no example code and the Z-Stack is not compatible as is, but could be with modification?

If this is the case, how extensive would the changes need to be?

    Thanks again,

    Rhys H.

  • Hello again,

I have done some more reading about Z-Stack and I think that I have a better understanding now, however I would just like to clarify a few things.

If I wanted to make the CC2520EM work with Zigbee on the FG4618 based board I would need to change the applicable HAL files, as outlined in the Z-Stack HAL Porting Guide? Is there any other changes that would need to be made?

Obviously I would not have access to the hardware specific example code, however the code examples provided for the newer boards can still be used as a reference.

    Thanks for you time,

    Rhys H.
