CC2545: CC2545 Range issue

Part Number: CC2545
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2592

Hi all,

I was designed 2 different boards with cc2545 chips.

In one board(Board X) I used CC2545 chip and cc2592 PA.

In another board(Board Y) I used CC2545 Chip and Balun IC and chip antenna.

I will give Supply to Board X by Li-Ion Battery. Similarly I give constant supply to Board Y

With this two boards I designed firmware and loaded into them. I tested the range.

But I get around 30-35mts range in indoor with this two boards..

frequently failing in Outdoor. I am not getting the atleast 5mts range.

Could you please provide the solution for below queries:

1)why it was happening in outdoor?

2) this chip was designed to work in indoor only or not?

  • Manikanta,

Yes, the CC2545 can operate fine outdoors, no issues.

    1) Board X, you need to verify the center frequency and the output power of the custom design in conducted mode (using coaxial wire to test equipment). I also recommend confirming the RX sensitivity of your HW before trying field trials.

    2) Board Y, Same a above. You need to verify the center frequency and the output power of the custom design in conducted mode (using coaxial wire to test equipment).

    3) for Board X and Y, you need to verify that your antenna is working. This is best done using a VNA for return loss measurements ( center frequency tuning) and a anechoic chamber to verify the antenna performance. If this is not available, you can perform some outdoor estimates, but you will have to accept lower measurements accuracy (+/-10-20dB) versus +/-3dB .
