TRF7963A: AES authentication fails with DESFire card sometimes

Part Number: TRF7963A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TRF7970A, TRF7964A

Customer have a new E-lock project, EAU is about 100K.

They used TRF7970A before, for cost concern they need to change to TRF7963A.

They are using DESFire card with AES key in the project, and they have been developing the firmware on TRF7970A. Everything works well on TRF7970A now.  However, after porting the firmware to the TRF7963A, it fails to  authenticate the same DESFire card 5-7 attempts out of 10. This problem doesn't happen on the PCBA with TRF7970A soldered.

Can you shed some light on this?

  • Hello,

With just the problem presentation as is, I can't comment on what could be going wrong. There are a lot of possibilities, though my first and foremost suspicion would be something firmware related given a number of differences that exist between the TRF7963A and TRF7970A. I would need a lot more detail to comment on that.

Also, if pricing is a concern they really should look at the TRF7964A. It's from the same generation of the TRF7970A (poor naming choices were made...) and would be cheaper than the TRF7970A. The TRF7964A is not just hardware compatible, but also software compatible with the 70A, so they should have no issues with it.

As far how the 63A and 64A would compare pricing wise @ projected volume, I can help you get in touch with our marketing team for that, so I will send you an E2E friend request to help facilitate that.
  • Hi Ralph, thanks for your comment.
Actually, customer chose TRF7970A to develop the firmware because TI provided the reference code on website, MCU is MSP430xxx.
Customer need this IC can support standard :ISO 14443A or ISO 14443B, so both TRF7963A or TRF7964A can support it.
but the key point is customer have used TRF7963A to develop and project schedule is delayed.
I saw that you send the E2E friend request , I clicked the link several times and I don't know if I accepted successfully...
I remember that the EAU for this project is around 80~100K/Y.
