Hello. We are developing a product that requires 0 current draw in storage (got that part worked out), but we need a passive RFID device that can be energized with the Reader field which then "wakes up" the rest of the system.

I have been researching various devices on the TI website, (we only use TI in our products due to the wide temperature range), and cannot seem to find a direct solution.

Ideas from the great TI folks would be appreciated.

for your application we would recommend using the RF430CL330H.

Hello Helfried and thanks. I researched the part and have looked at the module, (which we bought as well for our development platform), but I am still a bit confused. In our application, we will have NO POWER applied to any electronics until the RFID field is applied to start it up. I am under the impression that once the antenna has enough of a field applied to it, the VCORE output would start going up. Am I going the right direction here?

Hello AL,

yes, this is correct. The VCORE pin will give you 1.5V when an RF field is detected.

Again, thanks Helfried. One last question please, (I am a newbie at this). We will obviously have to have a more powerful reader to energize the system then say a smart phone?

Hello AL,

this will not help.

The VCORE signal is primary the core supply for the RF430CL330H and has an internal 1.5V regulator which is able to provide not more additional current then a few microamps.

If you need more power for your application I would recommend looking at this TI design:

"Dynamic Field-Powered NFC for Data Logging Access Control & Security Applications Reference Design"

you will find at chapter 4.2 a circuit which is used to get more power out of the RF field.
