TRF7960: Code for the TRF7960 EVM w/ MSP430F156

Part Number: TRF7960
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , MSP430F2370, MSP430F156, TRF7970A

Hi,

I have the TRF7960EVM (not the A version) and am unable to find the code for it. All references point to code etc. for the 7960AEVM.

Some references that I have looked at are:

Similar question but for the 7960A.

A detailed TI response on recommending TRF7970 over 7960A.

I do not want to write the code from scratch at this point in time - just read / write to the card using ISO15693.

Thanks

  • Hello Husein,

the differences between the TRF7960 and TRF7960A are only related to the ISO14443 protocol. The following document has some information about that:

    http://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/sloa158

You wrote in the subject that this EVM is using a MSP430F156. I am not aware of a EVM with this processor. The old EVM is using a MSP430F2370.

Because the TRF7960 is a very old device you should consider using a newer device / EVM.

  • Thanks for the response.

Attached is the TI document (slou193A) with the details on the EVM that I have. Pg 6, Fig 1-1.

    1. Please recheck whether there is any code / hex available for this?

    2. If not, any sample code (or code for the 7960A EVM) would do the job. From your previous comment, the ISO15693 section should be untouched, but will review and update as needed.

    3. For newer designs based on ISO15693 the recommended chip is 7960A or would you recommend some other chip (7970?). Is there a selection document / page that'll help in quick selection for future designs?

  • Hello Husein,

ok, I see this was the first version of the EVM, now ~15 years old. Never seen one with the MSP430F156.

The source code for the TRF7960A can be found on the TI web but is for the MSP430F2370:

    https://www.ti.com/lit/zip/sloc251

If you are using only ISO15693 the TRF7960A will be ok. The TRF7970A has more functionality for NFC applications like Card Emulation and Peer to Peer mode.

    Best Regards,
