CC1352P: unlisted frequency bands

Genius 9880 points
Part Number: CC1352P

Hi Team,

Customer is interested with cc1352p and want to know if they can used this in other frequency band. Below is the details.

"Our project is in dire need of an efficient RF Transciever that is capable of transmitting at 2245-2290 MHz. I see that the cc1352p can cover a lot of bands but this one is not listed, but I would like to ask if it is possible to set the transmitter to this frequency? Even if this requires debug tools or any other non-consumer tools I would like to ask you for your help."

I've check the products but below are the only frequency we have in the list.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Maynard

  • On the sub 1-GHz bands frequencies outside the bands stated will not work. But for 2.4 GHz we typically only test the channels that are defined for Zigbee/ BLE.

But the synth is tested down to 2153 MHz meaning that the chip should be fine to use down to this frequency but we haven't measured RF performance for the frequency range they are interested in.

  • Hi TER,

Customer have followup question, details below.

" The synths range is great, that is good news! Can one use the devices low level radio interface without any protocols on top like Zigbee/ BLE? We plan to use the chip with a custom radio protocol, I do not know if that is possible. The data sheet says that "The various physical layer radio formats are partly built as a software defined radio where the radio behavior is either defined by radio ROM contents", so what type of modulations can be used with this chip outside the Zigbee / BLE protocols, can it actually be used somewhat like a software defined radio? I am mostly interested in the transmitting part of the chip"

  • Prop protocols: OOK (for legacy protocols). FSK, GFSK.

As a start, look into the rfPacketRF examples (https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?node=APPfZpfFKj3fxPVzBdvo5g__pTTHBmu__LATEST). In syscfg you should be able to select some phys for 2.4 GHz.

Note that for the frequencies they want to use the settings should probably changed some (see https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/swra682 on how to make a phy). The BOM also has to be adjusted some since the reference designs we have for 2.4 GHz will not be optimal for the band in question. But for functional testing they should be able to use a Launchpad and just change the frequency to what they need.

  • Hi TER,

Customer have follow up response. Below is the details.

We need (G)MSK or QPSK! Can the (G)FSK configured as (G)MSK? I read that Zigbee uses Offset QPSK at 2.4 GHz, could this modulation be used without the Zigbee layer on top and on our frequency?

If this is not the case can you recommend an IC that has the capabilities we need? It is hard to search for this frequency band because, even though some ICs can synthesize waves at the wanted bands, they are not listed on the datasheet. Maybe if one of your chips ,that is using the same synth as this one, would be capable of producing the signals we would need.

    Thank you in advance.

    Regards,

    Maynard

  • Is it possible to share a full requirement spec for what they need? It's probably easier to cover everything in one post instead of one item at the time. Could you also share some about the application? Send me a mail if this should not be shared on a open forum.

  • Hi TER,

Good day, below is the customer response.

  • This looks like very low volume case meaning we can only give limited support. For QPSK I believe that the CMD_IEEE* commands have to be used (see https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/swcu185) with channel 0. If that doesn't work you have to use GFSK and the prop commands.

How is the range calculated with this phy?

  • Hi TER,

Apologies for the late reply. I just received a response from the customer. Below is the details.

"Can the GFSK be configured at our frequency(2245-2290 MHz) at 2Mbps with a frequency deviation of 500 Khz? Does it worth a try? I did not find any kind of data in the documentation about the capabilities of the FSK modulator above 2 GHz only in the sub GHz section.

What do you mean by how the range is calculated, why do you need it? The satellite probably will orbit with a radius of 3000 km, and our team will have an antenna designed to receive the packets. I can get you the exact values if you need."

    Regards,

    Maynard

  • I believe that the only phy we currently have available is BLE.
