CCS/RF430FRL152H: JTAG Connection Using Active Cable

Part Number: RF430FRL152H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I was trying to upload some code onto the RF430FRL152H chip, using the MSP-FET430UIF, and the L092 Active Cable. CCS gives the error, "MSP430: Error connecting to the target: Unknown device".

I have made the following connections:

L092 Active Cable (10 pin side)   |       RF430FRL152H

PIN 10 (ULVRST)                  |       PIN 10 (RESET)

PIN 9 (GND)                          |       PIN 25 (GND)

PIN 8 (THOLD)                   ---> NOT CONNECTED

PIN 7 (ULKTCK)                    |       PIN 22 (TCK)

PIN 6                                   ---> NOT CONNECTED

PIN 5 (ULVTMS)                    |       PIN 19 (TMS)

PIN 4 (GND)                          |       PIN 25 (GND)

PIN 3 (ULVTDI)                      |      PIN 21 (TDI)

PIN 2 (VCCULV)                    |      PIN 3 (VDDSW)

PIN 1 ( ULVTDO)                   |      PIN 20 (TDO)

Is this correct?

Best,
Mehzabin

  • Hello Mehzabin,

I have not used the L092 cable but think this should work and also the connection you made look good.

I assume problems with the supply voltage.
Can you please give information about how the power is supplied.
Is the RF430FRL152H supplied by the L092 active cable or has its own power supply?
Please check the jumper setting on the L092 active cable and measure the supply voltages.

    Best Regards,
    Helfried
  • Hello Helfried,

Thank you for your reply. The power is supplied by the L092 cable, which is connected to the MSP-FET. The jumper setting has been checked, and they are the same as the image shown in the post:

The supply voltage, is 2.12V, which is going into VDDSW of the chip.

    Best,
    Mehzabin

  • Hello Mehzabin,

first of all the VDDSW supply voltage of 2.12V is too high. From the datasheet you can see that VDDB should not exceed 1.65V and VDDSW has a few mV additional drop.

I have now a L092 active cable and tried myself to connect to the RF430FRL152H.
Your connections are ok, but the supply voltage and all the signal levels are to high.

I have supplied the target from extern with 1.5V. This requires also to remove the Jumper JP2-1 on the L092 cable. (JP2-2 is needed!)
The connection from the external supplied VDDSW to the L092 is still necessary to adapt the signal voltages to the target level.

With this setup I can connect to the device.

    Best Regards,
    Helfried
