Long Range Wireless Connectivity with High Data Rate

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1310

Hi,

I am searching for products on wireless connectivity. The requirement is to transmit data in long range (around 3km) without line of sight. The data size could be up to 10MB. LoRa offers long range connectivity with low data rate while Bluetooth/Wifi offers low range connectivity with high data rate. But I am looking for long range communication with high data rate.

Could you suggest any products for long range communication with high date rate?  Please note that there is no cellular connectivity in the area where the product is to be used.

Regards,

Akshaya

  • Not sure how high data rates you are looking for and you are not even saying what frequency band you want to operate in.

I recommend you to take a look at our Range Estimator::

There you can select different PHYs/Data rates for different devices and estimate the range.

  • Hi Akshaya,

Long range and high data rate is typically opposites in low-power wireless networks such as our CC13XX/CC26XX devices and LoRa, you can basically say that you trade data-rate for range. Very simply put you can say that in long range operations, you give each bit "more power" compared to high data rate scenarios, if you only have a X amount of power, you can either have long range or high data rate.

As a practical example you can take the "Range estimator" tool that is available for devices such as CC1310:

This could help you build a picture of how PHY and data rate affect the expected range.

What is the nature of the data that makes it so big?

  • Hello,

Thanks for your explanation and for sharing the links.

In this project, some sensor data is collected and stored as a proprietary file format. Hence the data size is big(maximum of 10MB) and this data file has to be transmitted to a computer(inside a building) which is about 3 km away. I cannot control the collection of data as it involves some external tools and software. So, I am trying to find a way to transfer this file.

Since the location does have cellular connectivity, I am searching for other solutions.

I used the Range Estimator and as you rightly said, there is a trade off between range and data rate. I would be glad if you could give me any other suggestions to resolve this problem.

  • Hi Siri,

    Thanks for your response.

As I mentioned in my first post, I am still analyzing which frequency band is suitable for my application. Since the data to be transferred is maximum 10MB, a data rate of atleast 1Mbps is required for this application.

    Akshaya

  • In general, lower frequency means longer range. However, I cannot see that any of our devices will be able to support 3 km range at a data rate of 1 Mbps.
