Powerless RF transmitter for finding underground objects

Sir

Is there any RF IC/Component which transmit RF signal without any battery power. My application is to locate an object buried under earth. Suppose in Optical fiber cables (OFC) joints are duried under earth about 1.5m depth from ground level. my project is to locate this joint kits. but the joint kits are plastic objects so it is not possible to locate with cheeper devices. So I want to put some RF transmitting device inside joint kits during closing the earth so that I could locate the joint by using some RF sensor from the ground itself.

So for this project RF IC/Component should work without power or this IC/Component should work from outside RF energy while checking. And the RF IC/Component using inside joint kite should be cheaper because we have to use it in lakh's of joint kits all over the OFC network.

So please suggest an RF IC/Component and/or method for doing this project

If you don't have a energy source the only option I can think about is passive RFID but the range for these are normally a lot shorter than 1.5m. Please check http://www.ti.com/rfid/

On searching powerless transponder I got TMS37157 IC. Whether this IC require battery power. If yes, then whether any other transponder IC is available which requires no power (Ie, Powerless Transponder) I want a minimum of 1m range, even I could use an antenna length little bigger around 0.5m to 1m. The only option needed is power-less transponder. Can you suggest a powerless transponder.

BTW: The TMS37157 is also passive, but unique because it can be used as dual interface device that you can attach your own antenna to.

the TMS37157 http://www.ti.com/product/tms37157 is a packaged LF HDX transponder IC, not a reader. (you will need to add your own antenna, tuning cap, etc)

The reader for that part is either the RI-STU-MRD2 http://www.ti.com/product/ri-stu-mrd2 or the RI-ACC-ADR2 http://www.ti.com/tool/ri-acc-adr2-10 or one of the RI-RFM/RI-CTL + LF Antenna combos.

there is also a kit which includes the TMS37157 mounted on a board + reader, too.
