Security level for Transponder - Reader communication

Hi all,

Given: System with RI-R6C-001A reader and Tag-it™ HF-I PLUS transponders (e.g. RI-I11-112A-03)

As I understand, there's a plain communication between them.

Question: Is there a way to have a security level in Transponder - Reader communication by e.g. AES encryption? Or in addition, how to prevent tags from being copied by 3d parties?

with the Plus tag, the simple way is to encrypt the data written on the tag and use the UID of the tag as one of the seeds (or as a psuedo "public key" of sorts (as part of the chosen encryption process)

this will not prevent the encrypted data from being copied from the tag and written onto another tag, but as the UID is different for each tag, if its used by the reader as part of the decrypt and validation process, then you would then have a level of security above plain text. its not high level, but it is a method that is used around the world by different customers to accomplish their goals.

Hi Vladislav,

You can create an encrypted message that is written to the tag utilizing a secret key and the UID. Please note that the UID of ISO 15693 tags is only writable by the manufacturer. I have attached a few slides describing the concept.
