TRF7960A: How to test / measure Vrf_INmin specification in the datasheet?

Part Number: TRF7960A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TRF7970A

Hi Team,

Vrf_Inmin ( Minimum RF input voltage at RX_IN1 or RX_IN2 ) at 5.4 " Electrical Characteristics in Datasheet. Max value is 2.5 mVpp.

How to test / measure it?

There is Note (2), " Measured with subcarrier signal at RX_IN1 or RX_IN2 and measured the digital output at MOD pin with register 0x1A bit 6 = 1.

Dose it mean that the results of a signal at RX_IN1 or RX_IN2 could be observed as the digital output at MOD pin with TEST register (0x1A) bit 6 = 1 as MOD pin becomes receiver subcarrier output?

Thanks and Best regards,

Kuerbis.

  • Hello Kuerbis,

yes, that is correct. I just verified this with my setup. I used a TRF7970A setup but this should be the same with the TRF7960A.

  • Hi Helfried,

    Thank you for your reply.

The signal at RX_IN1 or RX_IN2 is Voltage. Mod pin is the digital output.

How to compare both RX_IN1 or RX_IN and MOD?

How to judge Vrf_INmin at MOD pin output?

The customer would like to know test Method.

Would you please explain it with an example?

    Thanks and Best regards,

    Kuerbis.

  • Hello Kuerbis,

the Vrf_Inmin voltage is a value that is guaranteed by the datasheet. From my understanding this has not to be measured by the customer. The customer has to take care that the subcarrier level at the RX input has at least 2.5mVpp for a successful decode of the data. I have no measurement procedure how to measure the subcarrier level but would assume that a spectrum analyzer will do the job.

For the MOD output this will mean that when the subcarrier level (424kHz for ISO15693, 848kHz for ISO14443) reaches the min voltage level it should switch from low to high.

    Best Regards,

    Helfried

  • Hi Helfried,

Would you please confirm how to measure the subcarrier level for the datasheet?

Th customer wants to understand it.

    Thanks and Best regards,

  • Hello Kuerbis,

I don't have any further information about the measurement as I have already written in my previous post.

The subcarrier frequency has to be applied to the RX_Inx pin and the MOD output has to be observed. If you want to verify the datasheet value then apply a frequency with i.e. 424kHz, for ISO15693, and a level of 2.5mVpp to the RX_INx, switch it on and off and verify if the digital MOD signal will follow.

    Best Regards,
