CC1352R: wearable ultra low power tracker

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Our customer is looking at a wireless solution for a wearable ultra low power tracker and its counterpart access point. The environment is indoor factory building with a lot of signal blocking. It is required to always be connected and will be worn by all employees for safety reasons and monitor their vitals.

The access point has to be able to handle 40-60 clients at a time. The access points could be 200 ft or more from each other.
They started by looking at BLE and quickly discounted that idea. They were looking at LoRA when they learned about TI's WI-SUN solution.
Given the environment it has to operate in, is CC1352R suitable for their wrist worn device application?

Hi Art,

This sounds like an exiting product!

When you say 40 to 60 clients I agree, this is not suitable for BLE.

- One suggestion would be to use Wi-SUN. This is a mesh network and you can find more information here: www.ti.com/wi-sun

- A different suggestion would be to use a star network based on TI 15.4-Stack. In this case they would be able to configure a little bit more how they want the network, e.g. they could use the SimpleLink Long Range 5 kbps PHY if they are concerned about range. Hello Marie,

Customer placed an order for the LAUNCHXL-CC1312R1 and BOOSTXL-ULPSENSE. They are wondering if the processor on the LAUNCHXL board is good enough for a wearable tracker with how many sensors? They plan to use it on 5 to 6 sensors. Is this possible?

Hi Art,

That would probably depend on the sensors and their interface(s).

On the CC1312R1 you will find two (actually three) processors, you can use both the main processor (ARM cortex M4) and the Sensor Controller to operate sensors.

Applications like wrist wearable seems to have the sensor controller. What do you think is the reason for this?

Hi Art,

I cannot discuss specific customer cases, but in general I will say this about the sensor controller: Using the sensor controller will often give you a lower overall battery consumption (since you don't need to wake up the M4 processor). This is why it's very useful for all battery powered products.
