LP-CC1312R7: Can't join network with other board

Part Number: LP-CC1312R7
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WI-SUN, CC1312R7, SYSCONFIG,

Hello,

I try to join the Wi-SUN network set up by the border router example for CC1312R7 board with a custom board used as router. Here is my TI settings :

I receive frames from the border router so preamble and sync word are deteced. It means there is the good datarate, center frequency, channel(?) etc, so regulatory domain/Phymode seems to be correct. Is that right? I have doubts about data whitening, can an unmatched setting between nodes and BR prevent joining network without preventing my node to receive some frames? (wrong frames) I precise I can join the network with another TI board without issue so I am sure there is a setting mismatch between my custom router and the BR, but I can't figure out which one. I checked the network name several times.

Thank you for your help

  • Hi Benoit,

    1) What device are you using for the router node?

    2) What version of the TI SimpleLink CC13xx/CC26xx SDK are you using?

    3) Can you capture a sniffer log of the failing association process? We have guidelines for how to use the Packet Sniffer in the user's guide:

    https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/content/simplelink_cc13xx_cc26xx_sdk_5_40_00_40/docs/ti_wisunfan/html/wisun-guide/debugging-index.html#packet-sniffer

    Cheers,

    Marie H

  • Hi Marie,

    1) I am using an other board with its own Wi-SUN code. I can et up a network with two STM boards, but I want to use TI Border router (CC1312R7)

    2) I am using v5.40

    3) I can't for the moment, I only have one CC1312R7 board. But I can output tx/rx frames from the node and put them on a file I can provide. I will be back with this file quickly, thank you for your help

  • My issue is not solved yet, I used and SDR to confirm I was in fixed channel on router side, and I am setting up a WiSUN dissector to understand the frames I provided. In the mean time, does anybody have a clue? Thank you for your help

    Regards

  • Hi Benoit,

The Wi-SUN dissector will be very helpful to understand the issue, but meanwhile you could also check the preshared network key.

There is a network key configuration in the border router's sysconfig settings. It is in the Security module. Please can you check if you are using the same network key on your node devices.

    Regards,

    Sid

  • Hi,

At first glance, Pre-shared keys are the same but I can't be sure : the router firmware only show a "6LOWPAN_ND_PSK_KEY" which I assumed it is used as the Wi-SUN PSK. But it turns out it doesn't use it (I can't debug with the board I have, I do printf...). I saw there is a way to disable security with sysconfig on TI side, but when I link maclib_nosecure_cc13x2x7.a, instead of the maclib_secure_cc13x2.a it doesn't build, I have "unresolved symbols remain" error. How can I do to disable security? Thank you very much

  • Hi Benoit,

The disable security feature on the wisun stack is unfortunately not supported yet.
    Regards,

    Sid

  • Thank you Sid for your answer. On my side, I confirm I was looking at the wrong PSK. It becomes clear I have wrong security settings, and that is why my router doesn't join.

My router's firmware doesn't use PSK but PMK/PTK/GTK exchanges throught EAPOL.

I see in the TI Wi-SUN Software Product Brief that it is supposed to work the same way :

There is no mention of PSK in this document. Is the PSK acutally the PMK ? Thank you for your help

    ben

  • I forgot to mention : the router's firmware use Nanostack and mbed TLS as well, so I can tweak mbedtls_wisun_config.h on both side if needed

  • Hi Benoit,

I have consulted someone from RnD regarding the usage of this key in the association process. I will get back to you with more details regarding the same.

    Regards,

    Sid

  • Thank you, I am looking forward the feedbacks. In the mean times I was able to dissect Wi-SUN frames. Here are a few frames :

I took these frames directly from tx/rx fifo on ROUTER side so SHR and PHR are fixed by now, and doesn't reflect actual sent/received SHR/PHR. SHR is fine because I receive frames so preamble and sync word are correct. Maybe there is an issue with PHR but for now, I focus on the security, because once again, I see differences :  the bit 3 of Frame Control Field is Security Enabled.

-PAN advertismeent solicit (router side) : false

    -PAN advertisement (BR) : false

    -PAN Configuration (BR) : true

We see in the picture above that when security is enabled, a MIC (Message integrity Code) is added, and so is an "Auxiliary Security Header". So the PAN config is encrypted, and that is why I can't join. How can I decrypt it? Reminder : my router uses Nanostack and Mbed TLS as well as TI border router, soI can follow instruction on how to tweak settings to fit crypto requirements. I tried to tweak some settings regarding MIC64 etc.. but for now with no success. Further help would be appreciated.

  • Part Number: LP-CC1312R7

    Hi everyone,

I am working with a TI Border Router (BR) : LP-CC1312R7, and a non TI board board as a router. The router use Nanostack as well as TI BR I would like to join the Wi-SUN network.

I can print the router's received frames in wireshark, so preamble and sync word are fine, and Network Name also.

However, we can see that after the PAN Advertisement, the data sent by the BR is encrypted :

I assume the key the PSK set in sysconfig on Code Composer studio. Can someone confirm?

In the function mac_data_interface_decrypt_packet , the Nanostack on router side fail to get proper key_description and returns MLME_UNAVAILABLE_KEY. So it can't decrypt the frame, and then can't join network.

As we can see in the picture above, Key Identifier Mode field is set to 01, and according to 802.15.4, Key is determined from the Key Index field. (see table 9-7 of IEEE Std 802.15.4-2020).

Question: Even if I know that the Key index is 1 (I printed it on console from the router), I don't know how to provide the key. I assume TI provide a key to nanostack, I would like to do it on the router side. Can some one help? Thank you very much. Best regards.

  • Hi Benoit,

I am working on this and still waiting for RnD inputs. I will follow up and get back to you as soon as I get a reply.

Please note that I have joined the the two threads, to avoid confusion.

    Regards,
    Sid

  • Hi, I will wait for the inputs, thank you for your help

  • Hi Benoit,

I got a reply from RnD. The pre-shared key in sysconfig is not used in the joining process at all. This option should only be visible for the 15.4 stack projects and not for Wi-SUN projects. I apologize for the experience.

For the Wi-SUN projects, certificates are used on the BR and RN side for deriving the PMK, as you mentioned.

We would like to enable you do the interoperability tests. Is it possible for you to disable security on the router nodes?

    Regards,

    Sid

  • Hi Sid,

Okay for the PSK, no problem I understand, thank you for the clarification. For now, the process doesn't reach certificate check step yet, it is stuck with the first encrypted frame from TI BR : nanostack give me MLME_UNAVAILABLE_KEY error in mac_data_interface_decrypt_packet function. The first encrypted frame from TI BR is encrypted following instructions of IEEE 802.15.4-2016 : 7.6.2 Auxiliary security header. More precisely, if we take a look at the picture I sent, it is encrypted with a 64-bit Message Integrity Code (MIC), and the Key mode is set at "Indexed Key using the Default Key Source" (see table 96 of IEEE 802.15.4-2016). So it seems to be a key involved, from which the MIC is derived. If it is not the PSK, I need at least to know the key being used, and ideally, how to provide it to Nanostack (the same rf stack TI use).

Thank you very much for your help.

    Best regards,

    Benoit

  • sorry for jumping in this thread. On my thread https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/sub-1-ghz-group/sub-1-ghz/f/sub-1-ghz-forum/1079004/cc1352p7-maclib_nosecure_cc13x2-a/3997341?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=pre-shared#3997341 you clarify for me pre-shared key is a GTK key. So as I understand TI Wi-SUN stack filled pre-shared key on both BR and NR priority in order to skip the step that node router will obtain the GTK key from Border router when it is in joining process. Isn't it? I also want to know to how to disable security on the router nodes.

  • Hi , can you tell me where to find the document you mention in your post regarding the PSK being a GTK please?

: Is it possible to provide us an Application Note on how to join a TI network with another Vendor router node? Thank you very much

    Best regards,

    Benoit

  • Hi Benoit,

You can check on the thread I have given above. Sid confirms that GTK is pre-shared key. And if you take a look on the document you can search Wi-SUN FAN standard. However, you need to buy it. Or with TI Wi-SUN user guide https://software-dl.ti.com/simplelink/esd/simplelink_cc13x2_26x2_sdk/5.20.00.52/exports/docs/ti_wisunfan/html/wisun-stack/MAC.html

From the joining process after state 2 you can see that the joining node acquired GTK key from the network (BR)

  • Hi GP, yes that is right I saw your thread. More precisely if you go up this thread you''ll see the complete security exchange process. If GTK = PSK, it means there is no such process, as 4-way handshake is not needed in this case, which is confusing. I'll try to go for the assumption GTK = PSK just to see if I can join. I'll keep you in touch if I can.

    Regards

  • Hi, I think you can also check preamble count again, for Wi-SUN mode 1a/2a preamble count is 8 bytes, mode 3 preamble is 12 bytes.

  • Hi, I probably don't have any issue regarding preamble because sync word is detected well by my RF front end, and the frame comes in my rx fifo, I can print it, and route it to wireshark to my Wi-SUN dissector. FYI : I finally managed to provide the key to nanostack, as the GTK key. Now it takes the key, and try to decrypt the message. I don't have MLME_UNAVAILABLE_KEY anymore. I have MLME_SECURITY_FAIL. It fails in ccm_process_run() function, the processed MIC is different from the one received, I don't know why. Work In Progress.

  • Hello . I managed to provide the PSK, but computed MIC is not the same. By searching on GP's threads, he mentions a tutorial to connect TI Node to another BR board : https://sunmaysky.blogspot.com/2021/08/interoperability-test-between-silicon.html?m=1

In this tutorial, it is said to copy/paste the GTK hash to PSK field. I use the same firmware base as the tutorial: nanostack + mbedtls. HOWEVER, GTK hash IS NOT GTK. A SHA256 encryption + some checks are done on the GTK to get the GTK hash. So for those who follow this thread : PSK is apparently NOT the GTK itself. That is why my computed MIC is not the same and then security fails.

  • Hi Benoit,

Thank you for your patience and also for sharing your findings. I will convey this to RnD and check how we can provide the same key to both devices or if disabling security is the easier option.

    Regards,

    Sid

  • Hi Sid,

Thank you for feedback, I will wait for one of the option you mention.

  • Hi Benoit,

Please note that as mentionned above, I don't have R1 boards so what I do is printing tx/rx fifo of router node, and with a c program, route the frames on Ethernet port, ip.dst==239.30.12.66. Wireshark can then capture these frames. Please note that SHR and PHR are not relevant as they are set in the C program. I provide you the full console, and the Wireshark log.

I can provide you different logs for different setups if needed. Thank you for your help. Best regards

  • Hi Benoit,

In the stack users guide, specifically in the sniffer setup, you can see you can set the predefined symbol FIXED_GTK_KEYS, while building the project. This will make the communication to use the fixed GTKs.

In the ns_br_src project, you can look for fixed_gtk_keys.  Maybe you can reuse these in the router node side.

I am on vacation next week. I will try to assign this to someone. But please expect delayed response. Thank you for you patience.

    Regards,

    Sid

  • Hi Sid,

Thank you for suggestion. I predefined FIXED_GTK_KEYS on BR side. As mentionned above, I don't use TI sniffer because I don't have the required board. I found that on SDK 5.40 this feature seems not used (please confirm) but in sdk v5.20, ws_pae_auth.c use it : we can hardcode the key : this is what I need! :) This issue is : the BR example with LP-CC1312R7 (the board I have) use FreeRTOS, and it doesn't build with latest version. I can't find suitable version. Could you provide a good version of FreeRTOS please? Or confirm that latest version is supposed to work. Thank you for your help, we're getting close!

EDIT : I did a mistake on version, ws_pae_auth.c is in sdk v5.40, I am using fixed keys, and I have them now, I'll try to make it work

  • Hi Benoit,

The compatible version of FreeRTOS is listed in the SDK release notes:

    https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/content/simplelink_cc13xx_cc26xx_sdk_5_40_00_40/release_notes_simplelink_cc13xx_cc26xx_sdk_5_40_00_40.html

For SDK 5.40, the compatible version is

  • Hi Marie,

Thank you for the info. I inserted the GTK key in my firmware. It uses the right GAK to decrypt packet, but still can't join. Do you confirm that the key to encrypt packet on BR side is the GAK ? On my side, GAK = sha256(Network_name + GTK).

    Thank you for your help

    Regards

  • Hi Benoit,

We are following the Wi-SUN spec for encryption and decryption.

In order to help you with your issue we need a sniffer log of the failed associated process. You would need one of the following boards to capture it:

    • CC1312R1 LaunchPad
    • CC1352P-1 LaunchPad
    • CC1352R1 LaunchPad

You can find a guide here:

    https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/content/simplelink_cc13xx_cc26xx_sdk_5_40_00_40/docs/ti_wisunfan/html/wisun-guide/debugging-index.html#packet-sniffer

    Cheers,

    Marie H

  • Hello Marie,

Here is the log I made with an R1 board. Fixed GTK Keys. sniffer_log_wisun_R1.zip

    Thank you for your help

    Best regards

  • Hello, any feedback regarding the logs?

    Thank you

    Best regards

  • Hello,

When I had the issue 2 monthes ago, I was told I have to use same PSK on both sides. Then, that the PSK is not used in Wisun even though it appears in syscfg. Then that it was the GTK. All of these were false leads.

Finally, I was told that the wisun example goes through the whole EAPOL process, so I don't have to hardcode gtkt keys on node side because BR is supposed to give the keys. I gave a first log file one month ago with my board and my dissector, but you ask logs from your sniffer and your board (which I understand, don't get me wrong).

So I bought an R1 board and I did the log with your sniffer and dissector. Now it would be great if I could have at least a status regarding these logs.

If the logs doesn't help, can you tell me if something is missing?

Thank you very much for your help.

  • Hi Benoit,

I apologize for the delays on this thread.

To be able to completely decrypt all the Wi-SUN network messages, the network name must be set to: "Wi-SUN Network". This is mentioned in the debugging guide under packet sniffer.

This would give us more information regarding the packets.

From the logs, I see that in the very end, after an EAPOL exchange, there is a PAN config sent. This is the expected behavior. But it would be better to have more granularity with the information with the network name "Wi-SUN Network".

it would look something like this.

But also, it is interesting to see why a PAN Config was sent before the EAPOL key request. Were there any other devices trying to connect to the network as well?

    Regards,

    Sid

  • Hello Sid, thank you for your response.

PAN Config is sent by the BR without any nodes powered on. I use BR example found in simplelink_cc13xx_cc26xx_sdk_5_40_00_40. Here are the logs file with the right network name : 2742.logs.zip

There are one log file with my node which doesn't connect, and another between TI BT and TI node. The TI node connects to the BR. BUT, I didn't see any EAPOL request, neither on the picture you show.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

    Best regards,

    Benoît

  • Hi Benoit,

The zip file does not contain any logs. Please can you reattach them.

You are right, there is no EAPOL request in the log when using the WiSUN dissector, but the RPL stage is reached where the network parent is chosen and this happens after the initial security exchange.

    Regards,

    Sid

  • Hello, sorry for mistake : 1145.logs.zip

    Thank you, Best regards

  • Hi Benoit,

I have sent you a connection request on E2E, if you accept it, we can have a conversation there.

I still cannot decrypt the sniffer log you provided, with the decryption keys applied. I want to verify the setup you have.

    Regards,

    Sid

  • Hi,

I accepted your connection request, and sent you a message.

  • As seen with Sid, Border router and node weren't able to perform EAP-TLS process with EU band, I had to switch with NA band, it is working now. Thank you everyone for your valuable help and your patience.

    Best regards
