CC1350: CC1350 Sub-GHz link but OTA FW update. Using Sub-GHz or using Bluetooth?

Hello,

For a new design I need a SoC that includes a 433MHz transceiver and a MCU, but in a size not bigger than 4x4mm. So the CC1350 looks an ideal candidate.

Moreover, I will need to have a wireless OTA bootloader.That means, I will need to update the Firmware of the MCU inside the CC1350 by a wireless connection. Is there any code example of this bootlader for the sub-GHz link? Or is it a code example of an OTA bootloader using the Bluetooth link? Where my I find it, please?

Dear Joel,

We have code examples for both Sub-1 Ghz and BLE links.

In Code Composer Studio/SDK, please look at the "simple_peripheral" and "sensor_oad" examples for BLE, and "bim_onchip" for proprietary RF (Sub-1 Ghz or 2.4Ghz).

My target is using On-Chip OAD. But about Bootloader, in the next link

it indicates that bim_cc1350lp is not fully supported in this release. What this means? Then what should i use to manage an On-Chip ODA for a CC1350 by Bluetooth? What stack should i use?

Hi Joel,

I found the answer of your question, please look at the following thread: https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/sub-1-ghz-group/sub-1-ghz/f/sub-1-ghz-forum/615915/cc1310-oad-with-on-chip-flash-only. It seems like it is not fully supported due to the FLASH memory size. You can however try to look at the bim_onchip example for the CC1310.

I would recommend you switch to the CC1352, as it is newer and has much more memory. It only comes in a 7x7 package however.

We also have the CC1311 (https://www.ti.com/product/CC1311R3), in 5x5 package, but no launchpads on ti.com for it.

Unfortunately the maximum size I can use of any chip is 4x4mm. So,it looks like the only option would be the CC1350 using an external Flash. May you tell what would be the minimum and the suggested size for it?

Hi,

I would recommended the following families, as they are the ones supported out of our SDK (256 bytes/page):

_ Winbond W25xx family
_ Macronics MX25Rxx family
_ Micron N25Qxx family

The CC1350 Launchpad uses the MX25R8035FZUIL0, which has a size of 8 MB, although I do not think you need the full 8 MB. Moreover, that part does not seem to have particular sourcing problems.

If you pick one of thoses, that would allow you to get started with development right away.
