Hi

Having not used the sleep mode before I would like to get some information/examples on how to implement it, I am using a few threads and one is derived from a 100ms timer I would like to put the chip into its lowest power mode possible when the timer is waiting  to wake every 100mS any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for getting back, I have used the gpioshutdown SDK it works very well and lowers the current to around 100nA, unfortunately I need to implement a timer that will wake up every 100ms I don't think there will be enough time to completely reset the device and reload all off the information before the 100mS are up, I also looked at the other sdk gpio standby this runs at around  0.8 mA  I really need to be around 10uA or less when asleep, can you let me know the best way to-do this?

Hi David, 

This is a  higher current for standby mode than expected. 

Have you disconnected these pins mentioned here.

Yes I have done this and I achieve 100nA in full shutdown mode, but I would need to use a timer  to wake it up.

David: In shutdown the only way to wake the chip is a pin interrupt since no clocks are running in this mode. See Table 9-2. Power Modes in the datasheet.

That's okay, I just need a different sleep call that leaves a timer or RTC running, my questions may seem basic but I have no experience with Ti and sleep or power down so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Then the threads Sid points to are relevant. The empty example is also relevant to some degree since this toggle a LED every 500 ms. 

You can use a clock object that sets a semaphore every 100 ms and you can have a while loop that pend on this semaphore. If you don't have any other active tasks the system will go to sleep while waiting for the semaphore to be set. You can probably do this on other similar ways. Note that I have only used this in TI-RTOS, not sure if FreeRTOS  do the same.

I am using Ti-RTOS with pthread, and also use a timer to trigger a semaphore every 100ms but my current at present is 1.8mA. Are you saying I need to make no other calls it should go to sleep on its own?

If you draw 1.8 mA you have a driver that require a resource that draws current. I would have simplified the program to only have the timer and toggle a DIO every time and then build the program from there.

Yes, the power management are typically taken care of the drivers themselves. Make sure to not open any drivers(peripherals) that are not needed. 

When you block on a semaphore, the device should be placed into a low power mode, given that there is no other active thread. As per theGhostOf's suggestion, simplify the program and add components and check what is consuming power.

Okay I will test with just a timer to start with and let you know , one question thought later on when there are 2 or more threads running what do I do with them?

If there is an actively executing thread, then the CPU doesn't go into standby. If all threads are blocked then the CPU is allowed to go to standby. Typically you would pend the threads using events or semaphores, so that you execute only when the semaphore or event is posted.

I have now created a 3 sec flashing led (withThread) on a launchpad CC1312R but the current is awful typically 0.9 mA, surely it must be able to go a lot lower than this? its not usable.

I have attached the code can you please advise me as to where I am going wrong

The Timer uses the 24 MHz clock I believe, you need something that is running on the 32 kHz clock (check the datasheet for what is on in which mode).

I haven't really much experience on changing the clocks is there an example you could point me towards also what can I expect to get in terms of lowest current.

In this case, are you using energy trace for the current measurements? If so, please can you share the screenshots of your measurements for the GPIO standby example?

I have read the data sheet from page 26 and set up the launch pad accordingly, how ever when I follow the instruction on page 28 the EnergyTrace Stand-alone Measurement Mode does not pop-up.

Hi David,

The Energy Trace standalone tool not popping up sometimes seems like a User Interface issue with CCS. I have seen it a couple of times. I have worked around it by opening CCS with a new workspace and this way, the Energy Trace tool is functional again.

For now I have a current measuring device 100000 sample per second and can sample over different times will this do, as this current problem is delaying manufacture of the device .

A new workspace typically resolves such issues. 

I assume you are trying to use EnergyTrace in "standalone" mode. Does it work if you try it during a debug session?

What is the host OS being used?

It doesn't work in debug mode either, my operating system is windows 10.

What do you mean by stand alone mode I set it up as per Sids instruction above.

Standalone would refer to running EnergyTrace outside a debug session. 

In any case, both options work for me.

Can you:

-Restart CCS using a clean new (empty) workspace folder

-try to start a standalone ET session (which I assume will fail)

-Close CCS

Then attach the generated Eclipse workspace log in <WORKSPACE FOLDER>\.metadata\.log to this thread

A few suggestions from engineering:

-Try a new workspace again, and run ET from an active debug session (launch a debug session for the target first, connect to the target, load program (if applicable) and then run ET. See if that works.

-If the above does not work, try the above again except also enable Debug Server Logging before trying to start ET. Then disable logging and terminate CCS and attach the generated log to this thread (please zip the log first)

I have tried to enable debugging but it seems to be looking for a file to open before I can enable it, I have tried to create one but does not work

If you are using the CCS Support dialog, you can manally enter the path and file name instead of using he "Browse" dialog (or you can create a new file in the "Browse" dialog and then select it there.
