Regarding LAUNCHXL-CC1350 - Antenna and Simultaneous use of Sub-1 and 2.4 GHz radio

I have just ordered Launchxl-cc1350 and started playing with it. I had a couple of questions which may be quite naive.

1. The range for line of sight communication is mentioned to be around 20km on a coin cell. Is there some external antenna that is suggested to be used to get such long range communication? Link to tutorial or discussion anywhere would be really helpful to get started.

2. It is said to support both Sub-1 and 2.4GHz communication. Does it mean that it has 2 dedicated radios? If not, can the application change in real time to make use of either of the frequencies depending on need?

1) The 20 km on a coin cell was measured using the CC1310 launchpad which uses a different PCB antenna. The CC1310 measurement was done using the antenna on the launchpad. See the excel sheet here: e2e.ti.com/.../375556 on how different antennas impact range.

2) No, same radio. What is required to switch sub 1 GHz radio <-> 2.4 GHz radio depends if you are running a stack on both or something else on both. The first option needs more memory space.

Thanks a lot of the quick response. Just to confirm from your experience.

1. Does it mean that CC1350 would have much smaller line of sight range? Also, I'm planning to deploy the device outdoors and wanted to seal them in a box. Therefore is there an antenna that you suggest (e.g. UFL connector or something compatible), which can be soldered to the launchpad for both 2.4Ghz and Sub-1 Ghz to extend the range as well as extend it out of the box.

2. What is mean't by running stack on both? Sorry, but I'm just picking up on programming these devices.

1) For the antenna suggestion: How much space for an antenna do you have? Based on this we can suggest a solution.

2) Have you planned to run BLE on the 2.4 GHz part or something else?

Hi,

1. Space is not a restriction for me. Anything that can provide the best range for each frequencies would be really amazing.

2. I had planned ZigBee and was even looking at the ContikiOS. But I feel RTOS would have better compatibility and possibly allow simultaneous use of both ZigBee and Sub-1 :)

Sorry, most have overlooked your question.

1) Look at board #9 in www.ti.com/.../swra496.pdf. If you want an external antenna you can look into www.pulseelectronics.com/.../pdf or similar.

2) You could look at www.ti.com/.../ti-15.4-stack for the sub 1 GHz bit. Due to the stack size you would probably need an external flash storing the image for 2.4 GHz and sub 1 GHz and load the image dependent on how you want to use the chip.

Hi Ter,

Thanks for all your help. Let me source one of those PulseElectronic Antenna (RO8063/21704NM-ND says high gain omni directional antenna). Is there a technical name for the cables that are used to connect the uSMA connector on the launchpad to these antennas? Or any link to such cables?
