SMARTRFTM-STUDIO: device_control_panel crashes with Windows exception

Have come back to using this tool after a couple of years and when I try to open a control panel for a connected device it initially opens, then Windows throws an exception a few seconds later. The event viewer shows the exception as:

0xc0000409

The system detected an overrun of a stack-based buffer in this application. This overrun could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this application

device_control_panel.exe

It is highly repeatable. Trying to connect to a CC430 via MSP-ez430u. Also through a regular FET. Tried Windows compatibility modes, running everything as administrator etc.

Which version of SmartRF Studio are you using and if not the latest version, could you try this first?

Also, which windows version?

Sorry should have said. Latest SmartRF - 2.11.0. Windows is Win 10 Pro x64 with all recent updates. v1803 (Build 17134) I believe was the last major update.

The engineer that works with Studio is looking into this. As I understood he had no issues using the new or old FET and a CC430.

Thank you. Today I managed to get the FET working by using a different USB port (different hub). What still does not work though is the MSP-ez430u - the one that comes with the Chronos. I have a couple of these that I use to inject noise into the environment for testing using SmartRF Constant TX.

We have some issues finding the exact same kit as you use to see if we can replicate the issue.

Do you manage to do what you need to do with the debuggers that are working?

Since it sounds like it's dependent of the USB port it could sound like it's a issue with the driver.

It is just this kit? Can't be hard for you guys to get? :)

Not really getting along as I have 2 Chronos kits which I use to test interference with. It is not USB port related when using the MSP-eZ430 FET in Chronos kit. have tried in on my old PC too, which used to work fine before the current version of SmartRF.

My intention was to see if we could recreate the crash reported easily. Yes, we can get the kit but when we don't have it in the office we have to order it in. Even if we could recreate the crash and it was found to be a bug a fix would not have high priority since this kit is not used much and this is the only report we have gotten on this. Which would mean that a fix would take one or two quarters that I would assume is a bit late for you?

That's a shame. I assumed TI dev staff would have every manner of FET available on hand. Chronos is still a primary CC430 dev tool is it not? They are great for creating test noise, so convenient.

Can I get access to much older versions of SmartRF than are visible on the website? It used to work fine.

You can get SmartRF Studio down to version 2.8 at the end of this page: www.ti.com/.../

Please let me know if you need an older version and preferable which version.

Thank you for the link and assistance. Sadly the last version there (2.8.0) also crashes out the ez430 debugger. However it does display an error, unlike the current version that just crashes. See below. Looking back at previous testing notes it seems I was using a combination of 2.3.1 and 1.18.0 (the last v1.x update). Would it be possible to get those two versions?

I accidently downloaded 2.2.0, would you be able to test this version? I can set up a box enabling you to download the installer, could I use the email address you have used to register on the forum to send an invite to the box?
