CCS/CC1310: Getting started question using TI 15.4 OAD

Currently I have a working sensor/collector star network using the TI15.4 stack. Now, I've downloaded the new SDK 3.10. and I want to implement OAD. Regarding the hardware I have a cc1310 launchpad as coprocessor and a TIDA 00489 board (having a CC1310 chip). However, reading in the TI 15.4-Stack User's Guide 2.2 I am not completely understanding what to do with the bim_extflash project I've imported into CCS.

I have to compile the coprocessor and oad_sensor project and load the hexfile on the launchpad and TIDA module. Assuming I have a ready-to-use image for OAD updating, what would be my next steps?

What is the bootloader image manager exactly doing and how do I have to use it?

One more question regarding the Linux Gateway application. We already use a raspberry Pi, can we use the UART (usb) interface between launchpad and PI to send the OAD commands or do I need any other kind of interface driver?

However, one very important preliminary (maybe dumb) question is, if OAD is possible with the TIDA 00489 Board (provided by TI)?

I am a little bit confused regarding the external flash and the SPI part. Is all of this inside the CC1310 package?

Regarding the procedure, the firmware update is send via radio to the sensor node (in my case TIDA 00489), than the data blocks are assembled and send to the ROM and the bootloader within the ROM is flashing the MCU with the new firmware via SPI or UART, correct?

Yes, OTA is possible with TIDA 00489. For external flash, it’s outside CC1310 package. Actually, the OTA image is download over the air and write to external flash first. After downloading OTA file into external flash, the device is reset and BIM would move OTA image from external flash to CC1310 internal flash to start new update FW.

Ok, so if there is no external flash on the TIDA 00489, where is the image stored?

I assume the image is stored somewhere in internal flash and then flashed by the bootloader on the appropriate pages of the internal flash replacing the old firmware?

As I know, TIDA-00489 doesn't demo OTA capability. If you need it, you have to add HW and SW for OTA by yourself.

Adding deep level SW will be tricky but I guess it will be feasable with some help.

However, can't the OTA downloaded image stored in the internal flash? Although there might be a memory limitation.

Or what are the HW/SW constraints preventing a storage of the image in the internal flash and updating firmware from this point?

As I know, CC1310 doesn't have enough internal flash for TI 15.4 on-chip OTA.
