LAUNCHXL-CC13-90: What happens to power consumption and TX/RX signal strength if RANGE_EXT_MODE is not used?

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-CC13-90
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1310, CC1190

Hi,

I am exploring the possibility to use a customized board based on CC1310 + CC1390 as a CC1310 standalone board. What will happen in terms of TX/RX signal strength and power consumption in the following two scenarios:

a) RANGE_EXT_MODE is simply not enabled in collector/sensor example code, as a result PA_EN, LNA_EN, HGM pins on CC1390 will be floating.

b) PA_EN and LNA_EN pins on CC1390 are explicitly set to 0 and therefore CC1390 is essentially disabled. In this case, will CC1390 will simply let TX and RX signal pass through and not consume power?

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

    CC1390 should be CC1190.

    CC1190 is a PA/LNA front-end FEM for 868/915 MHz bands.

There is no bypass mode in the CC1190 so if the PA is not enabled in Tx mode, then there will be RF leakage instead.

Is your ambition to have a larger output power window from max output power to min output power ?

    Regards,

       Richard

  • Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply. My interpretation of CC1190 datasheet is if it is not enabled, there will be loss of signal strength, several dB probably, while not consuming much power. Your comment seems to confirm my interpretation.

My idea was to use the same hardware(CC1310 + CC1190, already prototyped) for two versions of product, one with the strongest tx power, and power consumption be dammed, another version with acceptable tx power and power consumption. I guess this is not possible.
