CC1200 Fast frequency hopping



Hello,

What are the considerations regarding the "off-line" calibration, needed for fast frequency hopping?

How frequent should I calibrate?

Do the calibrated parameters change mostly with frequency and voltage? If so, how sensitive are they?

Or in other words,

1. Can I calibrate once in a long time if temperature and voltage are stable? If so, how long is a long time, an hour? ten minutes?

2. What is the temperature change which will enforce me to calibrate again?

3. What are the symptoms of an uncalibrated state? How can I test it?

My main concern is energy saving, so I want to shorten the time of not transmitting/receiving/sleeping to minimum.

    If you are refferring to the document named "Asynchronous Channel Hopping System for FCC 15.247
    Compliance", than there is no reference to any of my questions.
    I understand the need for calibration and hopping regulation, my questions concern the implementation of such calibration (temperature, voltage and time dependencies and how uncalibrated transceiver behave).
    I would very much appreciate answers for my three questions above.

    A: Yes, in theory.

    2. What is the temperature change which will enforce me to calibrate again?
    A: have done some tests indicating that a temp change of +/- 50 degrees from room temp is ok and does not require a re-calibration. This tests has been done on two devices so no real statistical data.

    3. What are the symptoms of an uncalibrated state? How can I test it?
    A: If the PLL is uncalibrated the chip will start sending on a different frequency than programmed and the spectrum will be very wide (out of lock)

    We get these questions regularly and it's difficult to give a good "you should do the following". Even if in theory you should not need to calibrate if voltage/ temp is stable we have never done testing to check if this is the case. The consequence if the PLL for some reason goes out of lock should be considered. You will loose packets and you will most likely brake the regulations due to the frequency you are sending on if the PLL is out of lock. Therefore I would calibrate every few minutes at least to be sure that the calibration is valid. If you only wake up every hour you should calibrate before this and not do anything before the chip wakes up the next time.
