Hi,

I had ordered a CC1120 eval kit ( CC1120EM 868/915MHz) with SmartRF Transreceiver EB(trxEB). To acheive higher range, I had also ordered CC1101-cc1190em 869mhz (EM), by mistake.

The eval board throws an error saying it sees no radio when i connect the EM. Is it possible to use cc1101-cc1190em board with TrxEB?

Yes, it should pop up in SmartRF Studio as a CC1101.

On the eval board it throws up an error - " PER test could not detect a supported radio"

Can SmartRf Studio program the eval board?

My board - TrxEB is not recognised by Windows 10 at all.
I have installed the SmartRF Studio ( www.ti.com/.../SMARTRFTM-STUDIO) and Have installed the drivers too (www.ti.com/.../swra366) as per ( e2e.ti.com/.../625633)

I am using a Windows 10 x64 machine.

How does the TRXEB pop up in Device Manager? Could you post a screenshot?

No. There is not even a pop-up of a device connected on the USB port.

Yes, an LED above the enable button glows when i connect USB and switch on the board.

From the screenshot of the Device Manager it is difficult to see if the TrxEB board is detected at all. Expected to see one device with a "no driver" indication. Do you see any changes in Device Manager when you plug in the USB cable to the TrxEB?

If you have more than one USB port on your PC, you should try all of them.

From the picture everything seems fine. The lit LED is an indication that the CC1101-CC1190EM has been detected. You could try to connect the TrxEB without the EM connected. Then the LED will be blinking. With the EM connected the current consumption will be higher than without. Maybe the USB port is limited with regards to the max current that can be drawn from that port.

When I connect the board, there seems to be no change in the Device Manager.
I have tried on all the USB ports, but all give no response.
I have tried disconnecting the EM board, the LED blinks but the device is still not recognised by the Device Manager.

It could sound like your USB cable only supply power. Have you tried other cables?

Yes, a change in cable solved the issue. Sorry for the silly trouble.

Now the TrxEB is detected in the SmartRF software, how do I use the CC1101-CC1190EM board with TrxEB board?

SmartRF software detects only the CC1101 but not with the CC1190.

CC1190 will not be visible in SmartRF Studio. Double click on the CC1101 and select range extender in the resulting window. This is also covered in the SmartRF Studio help.

Double clicking on the CC1101, opens up the device control window. Where can i find the range extender option?

Is it possible to now program the TrxEB for these settings as I wish to test it outside the lab?
The TrxEB still doesnt recognise the CC1101-CC1190 board. I presume it needs to be programmed for the same.

If you want to test outside the lab and not use SmartRF Studio you can write code that runs on the MSP on the TRXEB. See code examples for CC1101. In addition code has to be added to control the p9ons on CC1190 as described in www.ti.com/.../swra356.pdf

orry I have misunderstood, please correct me if i am wrong but in the document the PER test on TrxEB for CC1101-CC1190 EM 898 Mhz is not mentioned. It talks about the connections of MCU, which I presume is done by the TrxEB.

Also referring the TrxEB PER Test Software Manual -

The system supports CC1101-CC1190EM but the code examples for PER Test do not include any code for 868EM kit but for 915 EM kit. -

Is it possible to use the source code for 868MHz and what could be the procedure for that so that I can run a PER test on TrxEB using CC1101-CC1190, using external batteries?

Should be supported. I downloaded swrc219c and in per_test.c I found #include "cc1101_cc1190_per_test_api.h" which indicate that it's supported. Test with your EM and see which options you get.

How do i program TrxEB with the example code? Should i need to download IAR IDE only? Can i use SmartRF to program?

I downloaded IAR and programmed TrxEb as per swru296b, yet the MSP430 does not recognise the radio.
Am I doing anything wrong?

Anup,

At the bottom of this wiki is a release of the TRXEB based Packet Error Rate (PER) software. This software can be flashed onto the MSP430F5438A integrated on the TRXEB board and then it will run while you are walking around performing range testing.

The PER software does support 868 and 915MHz out of the box for the CC1101+CC1190 combo boards. Using this software you will also be able to generate and test your own settings, but I recommend starting with known good settings.

You write " yet the MSP430 does not recognise the radio". How do you know? Have you checked the chip ID the MSP reads from CC1101?

Hi,

I did download the examples as given in the link. Installed IAR and programmed using the per... eww file. After successfully downloading, the kit shows " PER test couldnot detect a supported radio" on the LCD screen of TrxEB.

No. I mean when i try to run the PER Test, through the MSP , the LCD screen shows " PER test could not detect a supported radio"

When i try to read chip information the LCD shows the same error - "Test could not detect a supported radio"
