CC1352P: Ti recommended baluns for high-power PA output

Hi all,

In the datasheet of the CC1352P (SWRS192C) under section 7 Application, Implementation and Layout two balun IPCs are recommended for the high-power PA output of the chip.

I have not been able to find much documentation on these two balun IPC.

Is there any reference design / guidelines to be followed on their implementation to a new custom PCB based on the CC1352P??

Hi PM,

the documents you attach regard to the NONE-high-power PA output. Namely to the "normal" 2.4GHz and sub-1GHz outputs.

My inquiry is regarding the 20dBm ouptut.

Hi,

The standard BOM solution for the high power Tx PA normally consists of 0201 passive components for 868/915 MHz or 2.4 GHz.

For optimum performance at 868/915 MHz or 2.4 GHz, the recommended solution is to follow the standard reference designs (LAUNCHXL-CC1352P1 or LAUNCHXL-CC1352P-2) that use 0201 components.

However, it is possible to have a dual-band Tx PA solution that supports both 868/915 MHz and 2.4 GHz with some sacrifice in PA performance. This topology uses a wideband Marchand balun from Johanson or Anaren, 200 ohm 4:1 balun. There is no reference design for this available yet. Attached a preliminary schematic that shows the concept. Note the schematic is not yet finalized so just for information purposes.

Hi,

Our application only requires high power on the sub-1Ghz range.

We have also seen the alternative with 0402 components (CC1352PEM-XD7793-XD24-PA9093).

Is there a major performance difference with the Launchpad 0201 design?

The wide band solution looks really promising! I will definitely keep it on the radar for coming projects :)

Hi Max,

There is a slight difference in components values between 0402 and 0201.

If your design is based upon 0402, then it would be better to copy the CC1352PEM-XD7793-XD24-PA9093 design.

Hi Richard,

We are considering mixing the 0402 filter for the high-power PA output (based on CC1352PEM-XD7793-XD24-PA9093) together with the IPC balun filter (0900PC15A0036) for the other two outputs (based on http://www.ti.com/lit/an/swra629a/swra629a.pdf ) .

Do you have any recommendations on how to mix these two, or do you know of any issue is to be taken into account when taking this approach?

Hi,

Using the IPC (0900PC15A0036) for the standard RF ports and 0402 passives for the high-power section is fine.

Send me your schematic and I can review it.

For the IPC part, the distance between the chip and the IPC is important to keep as close as possible to the ref design.

Hi Richard,

Here the schematics.

We are currently struggling with the routing of the 20dBm circuitry since we are keeping the IPC reference design unmodified to the reference.

Would it be possible to send the PCB layout and routing of the RF privately to get your feedback?
