LAUNCHXL-CC13-90: low RSSI when compared against standard CC1310 launchpad

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-CC13-90
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1310, CC1190

hi,

referring to the screen shots below, i used smartrf studio to generate continuous modulated data on a standard cc1310 launchpad versus a cc1310-1190 launchpad....  with my rf-explorer consistently placed 6" from the antenna, here's what i see....

in general, the cc13-90 is somewhat lower than the cc1310 baseline; perhaps this is differences in the antenna????

i also captured the cc13-90 transmitting at 26dB....  and while the signal is definitely stronger, i somehow expected more....

to be fair, i haven't attached an external antenna to the cc13-90....

any suggestions, or is this the best i can achieve???

bob.

  • Looking quickly at the RF-explorer datasheet, this indicate that that the measured signal starts to saturate if the input signal is above ~-30 dBm. I suspect that what you are seeing is saturation and not the difference in performance between the two boards you are testing. Test with RF-Explorer further away from the DUT or use attenuation and see if that impact the results. Since the LP with a CC1190 has ~12 dB higher output power than the LP without you should see a clear difference in RSSI.

  • moving them further apart solved the problem....  using another LP to measure RSSI, i recorded -33 dB from a baseline cc1310 transmitting at 14 dBm and -22 dB with the cc1190 transmitting at 26 dBm; results were as expected....  i then dialed back the cc1190 to transmit at 14 dBm and likewise recorded -33 dB....

    thanks!!!!
