[FAQ] mioty Frequently Asked Questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MIOTY, CC1260

Q: What is mioty?

A: A low-power wide area network that offers a complete long-range and low-power solution for worldwide Sub-1 GHz communication.

Q: How does the mioty technology compare to other LPWAN technologies ?

A: mioty is unique in the way it transmits data. Instead of sending it as one packet, mioty divides the telegram (data packet) into multiple sub-telegrams that are distributed in the time and frequency domains. This makes mioty more scalable and robust compared to other LPWAN technologies.

Q: What kind of range can I expect from mioty?

A: 5 km in urban and 15 km in rural environments.

Q: What’s the timeline for support of bi-directional communication?

A: The mioty stack from Stackforce already has support for bi-directional communication as well as the gateways from the different gateway providers.

Q: Where do I find information about the PHY and security features of mioty?

A: mioty is based on the telegram splitting ultra-narrow band (TS-UNB) family in the ETSI TS103358 standard. If you are interested in the technological details about the protocol, please refer to chapter 6 of the specification.

Q: What frequency bands are supported with mioty?

A: As described in the specification, the 868-MHz and 915- MHz frequencies are supported by the TS-UNB family.

Q: How does the licensing fee for mioty work?

A: There is an IP license cost related to using mioty, this is a one-time cost per device, which is handled by Sisvel. Refer to their website for more details.

Q: Can you share some technical details about the mioty low-cost gateway?

A: Here are the specifications for the mioty HAT reference design from Fraunhofer:

MIOTY Profiles

EU0, EU1, EU2, US0

Frequency bands

868 MHz, 915 MHz

Sensitivity (EU1)

< -135 dBm

Blocking Dynamic Range (EU1)

> 60 dB (100 kHz), > 90 dB (LTE20)

Clipping-Free Dynamic Range (EU1)

>91 dB

TX Power

14 dBm

Connectors

Raspberry PI GPIO

Components for a functional base station

Raspberry PI 4, CC1260, small FPGA, external LNA, power supply, and antenna

Q: What are the key differences between the high-performance gateway and the low-cost gateway? Are there any differences in scalability?

A: The main difference is in the dynamic range and in the linearity. This will affect the receives ability to handle weak signals in the presence of other stronger wanted and/or unwanted signal. This could potentially influence the scalability, but from a signal processing side, there should be no difference with regards to scalability. The low-cost gateway is mainly intended for evaluation use, for indoor deployment or for rural areas whereas the high-performance gateway should be used for outdoor urban solutions.

Q: What gateways are currently on the market and what do they cost?

A: There are currently three mioty gateways on the market from Diehl, BehrTech and Weptech.  Please visit the mioty store to see their offering and request a quote or contact the manufactures directly.

Q: How to get started?

A: In 4 easy steps (TI’s mioty Product folder):

  1. Buy the mioty protocol software hardware bundle (MIOTY-HW-BDL)
  2. Download the mioty demo software for the 868 MHz band
  3. (Optional) If you don’t have a MIOTY gateway, buy a mioty gateway from the mioty store.
  4. Download the mioty® Demo Software Quick Start Guide
