WL1271 Information

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WL1271

I was recently asked for a datasheet for the WL1271 device and I came to realize I could not find one, and there does not seem to be a TI product folder on the web site. I did find a WTBU site but I could not find a datasheet for the WL1271 anywhere, is there a publicly available datasheet somewhere?

That same WTBU site shows WL1271 as "This product is intended for high-volume wireless OEMs and ODMs and is not available through distributors. If your company meets this description, please contact your TI sales office.", along with the missing product folder I am wondering if this is really a widely available device.

  • Bernie,

Since we are supporting OMAP35x+WL1271 platform customers through an integrated RF module, we've made an LSR module datasheet available which can be found under the Hardware Specifications section on our Connectivity Wiki for the OMAP35x platform.

The "high-volume wireless" language you came across online is outdated and incorrect.  Our strategy is no longer limited to very large customers and this platform is one of the ways we are helping a wide range of customers (big and small) get access to TI's wireless connectivity technology.  Thanks for the reminder that this should be fixed.

Thank you for your quick response, I just have a couple of follow up questions. Does this mean that there is no WL1271 datasheet available for the silicon itself, only the module? If this is the case, why is there no silicon datasheet available, and is there a way a user could get one if it was really needed?

  • Bernie,

Since OMAP35x+WL1271 platform customers are primarily developing products using integrated WL1271 RF modules such as those from LS Research and other module partners, we prefer to direct customers to module datasheets.  This is important as IC datasheets & module datasheet serve very different purposes.

However, if a customer does have a strong need to get access to the WL1271 IC datasheet, the best bet is to work through their local sales office where we can set up an NDA and help get them access to this information.

  • Hi,

    I have following queries w.r.t WL1271 device

From the WL1271 daughter card provided to OSK Rev-G board, I could observe that there are three connectors provided for antenna connectivity to WL1271 chip and out of which one of the connector is routed to antenna on-board. My questions are

    1. Why three antenna connectors provided for WL1271 chip?

    2. Do we need to connect separate antenna for each of the connectos? Or one antenna is sufficient?

    3. Does connecting to a single antenna has any effect on WLAN throughput achievable on system?

    4. I assume that each of the connector provided corresponds to WLAN, Bluetooth and FM connectivity. Is it a right assumption to make?

Please let me know the details.. Since I am unable to get the WL1271 datsheet at the said locations.

    Thanks,

    Ajit Basarur

  • Hi Ajit Basarur,

I assume you are talking about OMAP3 EVM+Wl1271 daughter card. I checked the said link for LSR module datasheet. It is working.
As Matt said no link is provided for the WL1271 IC datasheet. It can be obtained  through TI's sales office under NDA.
    If you referring to WL1271 daughter card for OMAP35x/AM37x (Schematic is available under http://www.mistralsolutions.com/assets/downloads/3530.php --  WL1271 Daughter Card for OMAP3 EVM -> Schematics), we have answers as below;

    1. Why three antenna connectors provided for WL1271 chip?
Module PIN -51 is Antenna terminal for WLAN & Bluetooth.
Module PIN -30 (FMRFOUT) & Module PIN -31 (FMRFIN) for FM (please note that FM is currently not supported on the OMAP3 EVM).

    2. Do we need to connect separate antenna for each of the connectos? Or one antenna is sufficient?
Both WLAN and Bluetooth share same antenna port (PIN -51).

    3. Does connecting to a single antenna has any effect on WLAN throughput achievable on system?
Since WLAN and Bluetooth share same antenna, using RF channels at same time has effect on WLAN throughput.

    4. I assume that each of the connector provided corresponds to WLAN, Bluetooth and FM connectivity. Is it a right assumption to make?
    Answer to Q1.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Sinoj,

    Thanks for the reply.

    Information was very helpful.

  • Hi All,

On Pandaboard ES we have TiWi-BLE is this the same as wl1271 or wL1273. Where do we get the source for TiWi-BLE ?

    Thanks

  • TiWi-BLE is actually WL1271L
