CC3220R: RF PCB Guidelines

Part Number: CC3220R
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3200, CC2650

Hi All,

We are placing 2 RF circuits i.e Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on our PCB.

Wi-Fi IC part number: CC3220RM2ARGKR

Bluetooth IC part number: CC2640F128RGZR

PCB plan: Board dimension is: 80mm x 60mm, Layers: 4 layer FR4 PCB, Thickness: 1.6mm, 1 oz Copper Thickness

Kindly suggest guidelines for placing both these ICs and associated antenna circuits on the PCB and suggest reference designs for implementation.

Since we have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and both may be turned on at a time, will there be any issues? How to avoid, please assist.

Thanks,

Denny

  • Hi Denny,

Usage of two 2.4GHz radios at same moment may to be issue (depending or board and case design).

You should switch your design to CC3230 QFN or CC3235 MOD. Because there devices support coexistence with other 2.4GHz radio (e.g BLE).

  • Hi Jan,

Thank you very much for the quick reply.

    Small correction:

Our requirement is: At any point of time there would be either WiFi or BLE i.e only one RF wireless will be turned ON at a time.

Please provide us the RF Layout guidelines for placing them on our PCB.

    Thanks,

    Denny

  • Hi Denny,

I am not aware about any layout guidelines covering your case MODA + BLE. But if only one RF device will be active at one moment, you should follow RF layout recommendation from datasheet for each device. In this case is only question position of BLE antenna. Antenna should be places that there will not be load between WiFi and BLE antenna. Detail explanation can provide you TI engineers.

  • Hi Jan,

    Thank you for the details.

I was checking if there are any reference designs with any seperate WiFi and BLE chips on a single PCB, but couldn't find.

Please check and kindly provide the details if there are any reference designs/boards.

    Thanks,

    Denny

  • Hi Denny,

As I remember there is one old public reference design with CC2650 + CC3200 - TIDC-BLE-TO-WIFI-IOT-GATEWAY. But I think this design will not meet your requirements.
