CC3220MOD: Assemble CC3220MODASF on the CC3220MODSF PCB

Hi,

We are designing a new device with CC3220MODSF (no PCB antenna version), currently it is difficult to find stock of this module and impossible to fabricate prototypes.

But we have found some stocks of CC3220MODASF (with PCB antenna version), just two questions:

  • Can we assembly the PCB with the MODASF version (with PCB antenna integrated)? As the footprint is compatible with CC3220MODSF.
  •  Can we connect to the PIN 31 RF BG of CC3220MODASF an external antenna (for example: AH316M245001-T of TAIYO YUDEN)? Because the MODASF version already has the PCB antennna, I'm not sure if this will produce conflict on the antennas or not.

    Hi Yong,

    Although these two variants are pin to pin compatible, the footprints are not the same as the CC3220MODASF has the integrated PCB antenna. Please see Section 10.3.3 in the CC3220MODx datasheet. 

    In the scenario where you do assemble a CC3220MODASF where a CC3220MODSF was intended to be, the RF performance will be poor since the RF is also routed to the integrated antenna.

    The better solution would be to use a CC3235MODSF instead since this is also pin to pin compatible with the CC3220MODSF and the footprints are the same.
