WL1837MOD: Dual BLE Role functionality

Part Number: WL1837MOD

Do the latest firmware updates for the WL1837MOD have support for BLE dual role topology?

We are interested in using this part simultaneously as a peripheral (in conjunction with an android phone) and a central (in conjunction with a stand-alone HID device). Is this possible with the latest firmware from this device?

  • Hi David,

Unfortunately, the WL1837MOD does not support this mode (also known as LE link layer topology).

  • Thanks for you response Jacob. I have been reviewing the datasheet for the WL1837MOD and under section 9.3 Bluetooth Low Energy Features, there is this bullet:

"Bluetooth 5.1 low energy dual-mode standard
All roles and role combinations, mandatory as well as optional"

This would imply that the part would support both central and peripheral roles. Can you elaborate on what this bullet in the datasheet means?

  • Hi David,

I don't think we support this feature due to the exclusion of support of in the WL1837MOD Bluetooth SIG listing QDID:

Is this the feature you are inquiring about?

I think the datasheet "Dual Mode" is referring to Bluetooth Classic and BLE:

  • Thanks for your detailed response Jacob.

The bullet in the datasheet that i'm asking about is
"All roles and role combinations, mandatory as well as optional"

Typically "mode" is associated with Bt Classic vs BLE and in the context of BLE, "role" means peripheral versus central. Is that typically the distinction between the two terms?

With that in mind, "All roles and role combinations" under the "Bluetooth Low-Enerey Features" section seems to indicate supporting simultaneous central and peripheral roles. Can you confirm that this is an inaccuracy in the datasheet?

    Thanks again.

  • Hi David,

Jacob is correct that on WL1837MOD we are not supporting this feature. I see your confusion with the wording in the datasheet not being completely clear. We will look at updating this on our end to avoid future confusion.

    Best Regards,
