Dear all

There seem to be serious availability issue with most of the CC3235 modules. When considering using a HF-microcontroller (e.g. CC3235SF12RGKR) to build a custom module, is there design support for the board level shielding?

Or does anyone have an other proposal to overcome the supply chain bottlenecks?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Chris,

TI does have design support for custom made modules, you should reference this page https://www.ti.com/tool/SIMPLELINK-WIFI-DESIGN-REVIEWS for instructions.

Concerning the supply chain issues, you should check ti.com for inventory instead of a 3rd party vendor. There should be modules in stock.

Thank you for your answer.

By the time my design is finished I will ask the expert to check it. How ever, I somehow don't dare to design something with a non "MOD" (eg. CC3235SF) device, since I don't know where to get an appropriate gasket. Is there a source for these on board EMI shields?

My favorite Module was CC3235MODASF. Is there chance that it will become available in the near future?

Hi Chris,

From my understanding those modules will be restocked shortly. You should sign up for the "notify me when available" so you will know when they are in stock.

Alternatively if you are not specifically looking for the CC3235MODASF there are CC3235MODAS in stock, the only difference being that there is no serial flash internal in the module. You can look through this product on this page https://www.ti.com/product/CC3235MODAS

Hi Jonathan,

Just a small clarification CC3235MODAS does not have execution (XIP) flash. That means code need to be executed from RAM. Both modules CC3235MODASF and CC3235MODAS have 4MB serial flash (SPI flash chip inside module).

Hi Jonathan

Thank you for checking. I went to see the stock info for CC3235MODAS. It say out of stock.

Since I cannot tell my customer, that it's gonna get interesting, to see, when we'll be able to supply his product, I initially asked about gaskets. Does TI offer assistance to get board level shielding or is that beyond the scope of this forum?

Hi Chris,

I'm not sure where you are checking the stock for CC3235MODAS but here it says that there are 1000 units in stock. https://www.ti.com/product/CC3235MODAS#order-quality

Normally TI does not offer assistance with getting board level shielding. If a customer chooses to design using only the IC (instead of the module) then they will have to look for an appropriate shield for their design constraints, namely the size of their engine area which they wish to shield.

Keep in mind that if the customer wants to certify their design (FCC,ETSI,etc) then the RF shield used would affect this. The module is already certified so that would be more convenient.

I went to the link you provided and it looks as shown in the attachment.

Seems there is a problem. Since I see there's availability for other components, I don't suppose it from my side.

Talking about the certification, am I wrong to expect, that only the modules that include the antenna do not need to be recertified? I would certainly prefer that.

Hi Chris,

That's quite strange that we see different availability of the components. I still think you should select "notify me when in stock" so you can get the notification, there should be more in stock soon.

Concerning certification, the normal modules that do not include the antenna do not need to be recertified, as long as you choose an antenna to pair with the module from TI's approved list of antennas. you can see the details of the certification and the list of certified antennas here https://www.ti.com/tool/SIMPLELINK-CC3XXX-CERTIFICATION
