CC3301: CC3301 Recommended Power Supply

Hello,

The CC3301 EVM uses linear regulators to produce 1.8 and 3.3V. I do not see a requirement in the datasheet for supply ripple. Also, there is no indication if the chip has built in linear regulators. I intend to combine this chip with the AM64x and its accompanying PMIC (TPS65220). May I power the CC3301 with buck regulators already on my board or does it require clean power from a linear regulator?

Hi Jessica, yes. I see the DC limits, but was interested in the sensitivity of the CC3301 to a typical buck switching power supply which may have 10-50mVpp ripple riding on the DC. Does the CC3301 have built in linear regulator to clean up the external 1.8V and 3.3V supplies?

Hi Joe,

Sorry for the long wait on this response. Because this product is still not fully released to market yet, we don't have all of the information of power supply requirements to share yet. These requirements are still undergoing testing.

For now I would recommend using the LDO's on the TPS65220 for a clean power supply. We have a similar LDO on our reference platform, called the BP-CC3301. You can access the hardware design files for this board at this link https://www.ti.com/tool/BP-CC3301. To save you some time, the LDO on that board is the TPS7A8801.

Thanks Jonathan. I understand that power supply requirements may not be fully characterized yet, but it must be known if the externally supply rails go through internal linear regulators or not. Can that information be shared?

Hi Joe,

There are internal linear regulators, yes. But these regulators are not really for noise filtering of the power supplies. I wouldn't really take them into consideration when choosing an appropriate DC-DC. Right now, the best thing to do is to use a LDO which is similar to the one on the reference design.

By the time the device is fully released to market we should have more information about the power supply requirements.
