I want to build a network of CC3235S Wi-Fi nodes to collect analog data. I need the nodes synchronized to each other in time, and synchronized to a PTP server. The PTP server allows synchronization to other DAQ systems that are synchronized to GPS.

What methods can be used to achieve accurate time synchronization for data collection?

Hi,

By CC32xx SDK is supported NTP, only. There is no direct support for protocol like PTP. If you need to support PTP you need implement this protocol by yourself. But this task may to be slightly tricky due to jitter introduced WiFi coprocessor (NWP).

If relative time between samples for each node could be enough, you can use timer, systick or something like that. But if synchronisation between nodes need to be achieved, you need to implement PTP or other synchronisation mechanism (e.g. based on UDP broadcast, transceiver mode, etc.). Proper implementation will not be an easy task.

Also, is there another wireless protocol that supports precision timing? I don't have a hard requirement for Wi-Fi.

Hi Carlie,

Unfortunately that document cannot be applied to CC3235 devices directly. Yes you can use WiLink8 device for PTP protocol. But if you need only precision time synchronisation, usage of WiLink8 with processor with Linux will be slightly overkill.

For capabilities of other protocols with 2.4GHz and Sub-1GHz radios please ask at other e2e Wireless forums. I am not expert to other protocols.
