Hi team,

I want to power off or put Wi-Fi section inside the module in deep sleep mode of the system where I do not require Wi-Fi connectivity. BLE connectivity can be optional to keep alive. I require below info?

Can I turn off Wi-Fi section by sending commands over SDIO or UART?
There is no separate power off pin found on the module. Only Reset pin is available. In case I want to turn module off or keep in very low power state where module's current consumption can be in range of few nA, how can I achieve that?

Hello Sunil,

We do not have a shutdown or poweroff command that a host could send over SDIO or UART. The best option would be to shutdown the module by bringing the nRST pin LOW. Doing so is actually putting the module into shutdown state and will achieve most optimal power savings.

Could you please let me know if shutdown or power off is not possible through command, how can I put Wi-Fi section in low power mode while I am not using it?

Hi Sunil,

Are you using this module in linux MPU or FreeRTOS MCU context?

If the host is not sending any wifi related commands, then wifi will not be used, unless you have previously issued connect command, then you should issue disconnect.

So for example, on a fresh bootup of your system, when the driver downloads the firmware, there is no immediate wifi activity because the driver has not executed any wifi commands. If you know execute 'scan' command, then the wifi begins the scan process and stops.

CC33xx does not do any additional wifi connectivity unless told to by the host (with the exception of connection, in which case you issue disconnect). The default behavior of the device is to reduce power consumption as much as possible when there is no activity.

Hello,

For FreeRTOS, you can use commands wlan_sta_role_down to halt the wifi traffic.

Hi Sabeeh,

Using this command, Wi-Fi RF radio will get turned off or it will be in powered off but MCU will halt the RF activity?

Hello Sunil,

With this command the RF radio will be in a 'sleep' state but it still consumes more power than when the device is in 'shutdown' state via the nRST pin. This is why I suggest using 'wlan_stop' command to put the device in shutdown to conserve as much power as possible, but this means that BLE is also inactive. wlan_sta_role_down means wifi traffic is halted.

Could you please share power consumption data for below modes?
1. Wi-Fi disable, BLE enable with peripheral and central mode
2. Wi-Fi disable, BLE enable with peripheral / central mode

Hi Sunil,

I think it's best to point you to the datasheet for numbers like this. If you need more measurements then this we can discuss the particulars, but because there are many variants and applications when measuring power, I also suggest you try to perform measurements on your own testing and align to the datasheet.
