CC3220: CC3200 and ESP module as Access point and Station.

Part Number: CC3220
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3200

Hi, I am working with Simple Link CC3200 and using as an access point, My question is can we use ESP-02 Module as station mode and establish a communication between them? as CC3200 being AP and ESP-02 being Station. If yes, How many of such ESP-02s can be connected with one CC3200(Access Point) ? Please Help!

  • Hi,

Yes you can connect ESP8266 to CC3200.

CC3200 supports only one client in AP mode (you can connect only one ESP to CC3200)
CC3220 supports up to four clients in AP mode.

  • Hi, Thank you for Replying. Just another question, Actually I am working on Home automation project and I want to use CC3220 as Gateway and various ESPs (More than 10 in most cases) as Nodes(which will take Instructions from gateway). Is this type of configuration possible? If Not what is the way to do that?
  • Hi,

CC3220 cannot connect 10 clients in AP mode. My suggestion for your case is use CC3220 in STA mode similarly as your ESPs. And communicate via infrastructure access point.

  • Hi Jan,
I am a newbie. Can you please explain me What is Infrastructure Access point?
  • Hi,

I means your WiFi access point which you use for connection into Internet or your LAN.

  • Hi,

Thanks alot! I got your point.
    Just One Last question.

Can I go for sub-1GHz based protocol instead of wifi and esps. And Can I Add more than 10 RF modules with CC3220 using sub-1GHz? If yes, How many RF modules I can connect? And Can I create mesh network with this?
  • Hi,

CC3220 have IEEE 802.11 radio only. From this reason you cannot directly communicate with another sub 1-GHz technology. But you can connect another wireless MCU/radio chip to CC3220 and use it for communication. Number of nodes and range depends on used technology ( please ask at proper Wireless connectivity forum - e2e.ti.com/.../ ).

With CC3220/CC3200 is possible another option. You can use CC32xx only at PHY and MAC level. Please see Transceiver Mode. In this case you can create your own star network (and maybe mesh network at 2.4GHz). But in Transceiver Mode are not available higher network services ( connection to WiFi network, TCP, UDP sockets, etc.).
