When I try to rename the "empty_CC3235SF_LAUNCHXL_tirtos_ccs" to something else I get the following debug error: -

What is causing this, how can I rename this project? I found it here -
Since this version of the SDK require CCS 9.2.0 according to 
have you tested with this version?
I tested with CC9.2/ latest CC32xx SDK and renaming works.
I imported the empty example to CCS, right clicked on the imported example and selected "rename".

If I rename an example and debug it, I see a window come up that asks if I would like to use my previous debug settings. This is the prompt I see since I've renamed my project many times.
If I use a previous debug configuration, I see the same error as you. But if I use new debug settings (by pressing Cancel on this window), I don't have any issues.
You can also go into your CCS workspace, navigate to your project folder, and delete the .launches folder. This is where all the previous debug settings are stored. After you've deleted the folder, left click on your Project Explorer pane in CCS and hit Refresh to sync.
If you rename a project, you may want to delete both the .launches and Debug folder before rebuilding since they retain files with old project names. I don't know why this behavior seems to affect the CC32xx devices, but we can check with the CCS team.
