CC3200STK-WIFIMK: CC3200STK-WIFIMK - Connection problems to IBM Cloud - Watson IoT

Part Number: CC3200STK-WIFIMK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-CC3235SF, CC-DEVPACK-DEBUG, CC3220SF, CC3200, CC3235SF

Hello,

I ordered some TI Products (sensors and launchpad) that was supposed to be connected to IBM Watson IoT Platform.

The products are: 2 of CC3200STK-WIFIMK with CC-DEVPACK-DEBUG and 1 of LAUNCHXL-CC3235SF;

After the initial configuration of the (TI) SensorTag mobile app, I noticed that I am not able to connect the sensors to my Watson IoT Platform, because the Cloud URL function cannot be accessed and edited. Why the function is not working?

In this situation:

How can I connect CC3200STK-WIFIMK to one of my IBM IoT Watson cloud?

How about connecting the LAUNCHXL-CC3235SF in the same scenario? Do I need one specific Booster Pack in addition?

Thank you for your support,

Best regards!

Order #T00572217

  • Hello,

Have you connected the sensortag to the AP? Once this is done it will automatically try to connect to the cloud.

    Jesu

  • Hello,

I was able to connect the sensortag to the AP, also to IBM Quickstart but I cannot modify the Cloud URL to send the sensor data to one of my IBM Watson IoT Platform. The URL seems to be ,,read only'' and autogenerated.

    Thank you!

  • Correct. The WiFi sensortag cannot be modified in anyway. It is strictly for demonstration purposes.

    Jesu

  • Hello Jesu,

from the technical perspective, I understand. From the buying perspective it is not so clear. This restriction is not mentioned in the product description on TI Store. I was not aware of this before buying the sensors. More over, on the product box the sensors are named as ,,SensorTag Development Kit''. There is nothing to Develop with CC3200STK-WIFI. Maybe it's a good idea to add a warning in TI Store for this product with the message that the sensors are not able to connect to any cloud or platform, but only to that IBM Quickstart. Now I have to look for different devices that are able to send data to IBM Watson IoT Cloud and to double check the information here.

    Thank you,

    Best regards!

  • Our wifi sensortag product page has an important note section indicating it's for demonstration purposes only. I agree, the label on the box is misleading. If it's any consolation, you can use our CC3220 or CC3235 Launchpad board for which we have an mqtt client example that communicates with IBM right out of the box. You could then use our sensor booster pack and integrate our SAIL plugin (sensor driver SW) to the mqtt example to report sensor data to IBM.

    I hope this helps.

    Jesu

  • Hello Jesu,

I agree also with you about the note indicating that the sensor is for demonstration purposes only. This doesn't say that the sensor is restricted and not able to be connected to any cloud instance cause down to the page, there are also notes that are misleading. You can see in the attach. Based on TI Product Specifications on TI Store, I bought the sensors. For a ''demo'' project, I would like to send some sensors data (temperature, humidity, barometer) in my IBM IoT Watson platform, and there to adjust visualization, to check if the data format sent by the sensor is according to what the platform can manage, also I would like to export the data in a database. Also, should not be considered sensor ''development'' since the only change is suppose to be the sensor CLOUD URL.

Thank you for the great support and clarifications on this topic,

    Best Regards!

  • Dear Jesu,

please be kind and provide the URL to these products that I need for the scenario, ,,Launchpad, compatible booster pack, SAIL Plugin so I can order strictly according to your recommendation.

    Thank you!

  • Hello,

Below are the links to the items needed to start working on a setup.

Please keep in mind we don't have an equivalent demo like sensortag where it uses HTTP, MQTT, provisioning, OTA etc. But we have many individual demos that showcase these features individually.

The CC3220SF Launchpad (LP for short) works with our CC32XX SDK. Just from a value perspective CC3220SF offers much more than the CC3200 predecessor on the Wi-Fi sensortag. There's an IBM Watson demo that works right out of the box. Also provisioning, HTTP, OTA etc. There is demos for basically every feature on the device that work right out of the box and you can modify.

The boosterpack is a sensor board designed to be compatible with any of our Launchpads. You just plug this into our LP and download the SAIL plugin software which has a bunch of examples that use every sensor.

And of course, if you have any questions you can always post them on E2E and we will help anyway we can.

    Jesu

  • Hi,

In addition to answer from Jesu. According your first question, it looks that you have already CC3235SF LaunchPad. If you want to use this kit, you don't need to buy CC3220SF LaunchPad. CC3235SF LP will do same job as CC3220SF LP, even is slightly better. Sensor Boosterpack should work with Sensor Boosterpack fine.

  • Hello,

There is no CC3235SF examples in the SAIL plugin but I can confirm the CC3220SF examples will work with it. If you already have CC3235SF already just use that.
