Is there any way to simply use gpio pins with an op-amp+speaker circuit to play music?

Hi,

Generally no. Maybe you can simulate something like a sound from "PC speaker" using PWM but this will not be music definitely. For music you will need to use audio coder (like at audio booster pack).

Thanks for your reply. Does that mean in theory I could purchase a separate DAC module that runs on, say, SPI or I2C and use that with the launchpad?

Hi,

Yes, you can. But implementation at software side will be up to you only. From this reason it make sense use same codec as is at CC3200AUDBOOST (e.g. TLV320AIC3254) and re-use code from wifi_audio_app SDK example.
