CC3100BOOST: Router Function

Part Number: CC3100BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3135, CC3120, CC3100, CC3200

Hi Team, I am posting for a customer.

Customers Inquiry:

I would like to use the router function, because in this building, where the Launchpad is used, there is no router and no network available. The BoosterPack should build its own network with other Launchpads. But at the same time, the Launchpad with the router function should also act as a web server, so that the data from this Launchpad can be delivered to the PC too. The other Launchpads should only act as web servers. The PC is a client, which is sometimes in the building to check the data from the Launchpad stations.

Hoping for your kind response.

Thank you.

Regards,

Mark

  • Hi Mark,

Routing feature is not supported any CC31xx/CC32xx device. It may to be possible to create router with CC3120/CC3220 or CC3135/3235 devices. But this this will be unnecessarily complex task. CC32xx/CC31xx device are designed for low power end point use cases.

CC3100/CC3200 devices supports only one client at AP mode. CC3120/CC3135/CC3220/CC3235 devices supports up to four client at AP mode. From this reason this SimpleLink devices are not a best choice for such use case. If I am not wrong WiLink devices support up to 10 clients at AP mode. But it sill be much better and cheaper use commercial AP from some reputable manufacturer.

  • Hi Mark,

Basically, the Simplelink AP (access point) role will support your requirements for the "router".

The limitation will be on the number of clients it supports. As Jan mentioned the CC3100 supports only one station while CC3120 supports up to 4 stations.

There shouldn't be any problem on the clients' side.

As Jan said, the wilink in AP mode can support up to 10 stations so may be considered as well for the "Router" role (but it is typically integrated with and MPU running linux and not supported through a boosterpack).
