WL1835MOD: Wi-Fi throughput harshly declines while a Bluetooth connection is maintained

Part Number: WL1835MOD

Hello Support,

This post is a continuation of the previous post WL1835MOD: Wi-Fi beacon loss while scanning with Bluetooth

As instructed, firmware version (Rev 8.9.0.0.72) was loaded into our custom board and Wi-Fi logs were captured using the gLogger tool following the steps found in here.

Attached are two .csv files of the logs captured.  In the first log a download test using Wi-Fi was tested while Bluetooth was not used; meaning that SS1BTPM was not actively running and nothing from Bluetopia was used.  The second log used the same Wi-Fi connection; however, this time Bluetooth was being used where SS1BTPM was actively running and a Bluetooth connection with a HSP/HFP device was maintained.

The test command used was:

wget --output-document=/dev/null http://speedtest.wdc01.softlayer.com/downloads/test500.zip

In the first test, it is observed that the time to download the test file was 2 minutes and 31 seconds.

4743.wifi_no_bt_connections_v72.csv

In the second test, the time to download the same file was 17 minutes and 22 seconds.

wifi_bt_connected_v72.csv

Version (Rev 8.9.0.0.85) was also tested and yielded the same results.

As mentioned previously, throughput of Wi-Fi drops as well as constant beacon loss is experienced while a Bluetooth connection is maintained.  Is there a version for WL18xx that corrects the issues we are experiencing?

Furthermore; it has been observed that there does in fact exist a known issue with co-existence between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth based on the following release notes:

R8.7

R8.7_SP3

  • Jesus,

At the time of the earlier post you referenced, I think there was a typo and it should have suggested v82 or v8x anyway.  v72 is very old.  Anyway v86 is the latest and has a BT coex fix.  I'll have one of our experts chime in, but definitely try v86.

    Rev 8.9.0.0.86 -

                    - APUT / BT coex issue fixed by making adjustments to  Wi-Fi adaptivity code when BT is enabled

  • Hello Travis,

Thank you for the quick reply.  As I mentioned before, version 8.9.0.0.85 was tested and this also yielded the same result of very slow download speed while a Bluetooth connection was maintained.  Furthermore, version 8.9.0.0.86 was recently tested as instructed and again this version produces the same results as all of the versions previously tested; very slow download while Bluetooth connection is maintained.  Our issue is still not resolved.

Wi-Fi throughput while Bluetooth is not being used:

Wi-Fi throughput while a Bluetooth connection is maintained:

In the image for Wi-Fi throughput while a Bluetooth connection maintained, it is observed that Wi-Fi connection was lost in the form of the + sign.

Attached is a log file for the 8.9.0.0.86 version.

What other solutions can your team provide us?  This discovered issue is critical for us as it negatively affects the performance of our product.  A lot of our clients are demanding a solution to this problem soon.

    I await your further instructions.

    Regards,

    Jesus

  • Jesus,

we don't see this issue at our end. We are able to run Wi-Fi / BT simultaneously without any issues.

pls make sure you are configuring the device properly. It needs be done one time - configure-device.sh

Are you able to order one of our EVMs and use it as reference ? Example: Beaglbbone black + E14 wireless cape ?
