cc3100 without external flash

Not sure I understand exactly what you are trying to achieve. Can you elaborate more? are you going to use WiFi capabilities? if so, what exactly? station/AP? etc.

I asking becasue without the serial flash the device is really lacking many functional features as all system and configurations are stored on the serial flash, also during run time.

I'll provide some examples:

1. the networking firmware is exectuted from ROM. It means you cannot load new service packs to fix bugs/issues discovered along the way
2. with CC3100, you will not be able to boot as AP as this is a configuration stored on the flash
3. you will not be able to set any WLAN profiles for connection, set IP address if you are working static IP, set any parameters for the services such as HTTP server, mDNS, etc
4. SSL/TLS connection may fails if you are trying to authenticate the server as you cannot set date/time (also stored on the flash)
5. and more...
