default CC3100 mode

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3100BOOST, CC3100

We've noticed that CC3100BOOST boards purchased in the last few months can sometimes have problems starting up in Station mode.  We only use Station mode (as default) during regular operation.  Commissioning is performed using SimpleLink.

The CC3100BOOST will sometimes start in AP mode.  We have formatted and installed the latest SP.  Earlier boards did not have this problem.  Since these boards are sometimes remotely located, this can be a big problem.  Any comments or suggestions?

  • Hi Steve,

What Host MCU is connected to CC3100 BP? What program is loaded to Host MCU + CC3100 BP?

  • Markel,

The host is the MSP432P401R LaunchPad.  Our custom MSP432 program processes serial data and posts it to our web server.  We only create a profile on the CC3100BOOST using SimpleLink and normally operate as a Station.  The MSP432 and the CC3100BOOST are independently powered via USB with J8 on the CC3100BOOST set accordingly.

This wasn't a problem until last Fall when newly received CC3100BOOSTs began starting up in AP mode and / or losing profiles.  That's when we started formatting / flashing the CC3100BOOST.  That corrected most of the problems but not all and worse, I'm not sure how stable the CC3100BOOST is.  Last week I had one of our technician's set the device to Station mode to get it to start-up correctly whereas for several weeks before it started correctly using the default mode.  It's like the CC3100BOOST's memory becomes corrupt.

I'd like to know what should be done so the CC3100BOOST remains stable.  Earlier boards were very stable.

    Are there other similar reports?

    Steve

  • HI Steve,
I haven't heard of anything like this so far. See page 6 of the CC3100 datasheet, where there is a pin in the table for FORCE_AP. Perhaps the MSP432 is toggling this pin somehow? Is there a difference in the Revision number of the CC3100BOOST boards where you are seeing the issue?

  • Aaron,

The issue with the CC3100 default mode has been identified and resolved on our end.  The problem on our end was the result of not having our IDE / CC3100 service pack in sync with the latest versions (small problem) and a recent update in our firmware (bigger problem).

Since identifying and resolving the issues, our CC3100s behave very well now.

    Thanks for your support.
