If CC3220SF based boars are used in an area where Wi-Fi communications are not allowed, could the radio be turned off with the processor still running as normal?

Yes,

You can call the sl_Stop() function to turn off the Wi-Fi functionality.

I tried this and the unit rebooted?

I wanted to only turn off the wifi radio and let the program continue as normal. Controlled by buttons/switches and/or the serial interface.

Hi,

By calling sl_Stop() is stopped network processor (NWP). When NWP is stopped you cannot use any sl_ API call (filesystem API, netowrk or WiFi API, etc.). But all resources and peripherals of application processor (Cortex-M4) you can use without any limitation.
